So i'm underwhelmed in the extreme by this unit.
Fairly pricey by point cost, wholly uninspired defensive stats, and a decentish gun (i say decentish because i'm a fan of handcannons and this is one point of POW off that. Though in fairness i am a fan of handcannons on casters who can boost...)
The critical nature of the effects on the gun make them unreliable in the extreme without whites of their eyes on the CA, and even that's within 8". If your target is within 8" of your whole focus ranged unit, the next turn is going to go quite ugly more than likely.
So i get the whole "crucible guard is a debuff faction so those POW 11's with combined are way more powerful than they appear"!
Yes, quite.
However for less points outlay i look at things like Stormtroopers, and i prefer them in nearly all instances ; the blast damage is a better crowd clearing mechanism, they can potentially involve themselves from a greater threat range away, they are less in numbers but more durable (particularly at range) and their gun effects are reliable - they also have an easier time hurting armor ; every Storm Trooper is the base equivalent of 3 combining Infantry in terms of POW.
Now combined ranged attack can conceivably produce huge hideous POW shots on targets, made all the better with debuffs. However i'm just not sure its worth the cost to live that dream when Storm troopers do it much more easily and cheaply, and rocket troopers may not have the raw damage outlay, but jam far superior (in that, they can jam!) and their raw damage outlay is actually not all that smaller when you factor in the bombs and slug guns.
Similarly Mage Static just feels so... out of place on the attachment. its a very nice ability, no doubt, but it feels out of place in the faction and on top of that really doesn't help their role in terms of the problems i've pointed out (though i suppose it does offer a bit of assistance in getting them into position by stymieing magic attack threat).
I'm just not seeing it : even with all the debuffs theoretically applied, i'd almost always rather have either Storm Troopers or Rocketeers.
Does anyone see something I don't ? Is anyone stoked for these guys and if so why? Anyone agree with my stance that these guys are sort of the dud of the faction ?
.... EDIT: I did brainfart on Repo in theme, so that does improve them a bit. Still underwhelmed because other Crucible Guard stuff gets that too.
EDIT2: Ah, McKay + Fire Blossom + these guys. Okay, i can see their place now. Nichey, but its there.
