So our little group has some questions that keep cropping up in our games, mostly about how forests “work”. From reading the rules, forests count as ‘rough terrain’. If you are “completely within” a forest (3” from the edge)you gain concealment. (+2 defense) A forest blocks LOS if there are no units within 2” of the edge?
My questions are: So if say, half a unit is behind a forest and the other half in open terrain, can the entire unit charge a target if they have pathfinder? Or just the members of the unit that have LOS? Can only half a unit charge? If a unit walks into a forest that contains an opposing unit can they engage in melee if they get in weapon range? Do units in base to base contact still benefit from concealment? Any help would be appreciated...

Models completely within the forest gain concealment only from ranged attacks. A model has LOS up to 3 inches through forest terrain. Regardless of forest shape, models on opposite sides of the forest do not have LOS. A model can only charge what it has LOS to.

So what if half a unit does not have LOS do they still charge the same target one or two have LOS to? Can you determine LOS with just one model from a larger unit?

So what if half a unit does not have LOS do they still charge the same target one or two have LOS to? Can you determine LOS with just one model from a larger unit? You cannot, that is a rule in "that other game". Contrary to said game, in Warmachine, every model in a unit does whatever it wants, they just have to follow the same order. So if a unit gets the press forward order, each will run or charge, but they can individually choose which of the two they do and even where they go. For instance, 2 models may each charge at a single warjack, 2 others each charge a different enemy trooper model and the rest runs. Menalios already outlined the basic rules for forests. So to specifically answer your questions: So if say, half a unit is behind a forest and the other half in open terrain, can the entire unit charge a target if they have pathfinder? Technically yes, but you don't need pathfinder to charge, you just go slower through the forest. By "technically" I mean, each model can individually charge something they have LOS to, if they don't have LOS, they can't charge and must therefore run. Or just the members of the unit that have LOS? See above, you need LOS to charge. Can only half a unit charge? Of course If a unit walks into a forest that contains an opposing unit can they engage in melee if they get in weapon range? Yes, you can even charge them if they were within 3" of the edge. Contrary to another game, you don't need to charge in Warmachine to be able to melee someone, simply walking and whacking them is equally valid. Do units in base to base contact still benefit from concealment? Yes, provided they are completely within the forest, but only against ranged attacks. This may come into play with models with the Gunfighter advantage.

If you are “completely within” a forest (3” from the edge)you gain concealment. (+2 defense) As nobody has corrected this so far: "Completely within" means, the whole base is somewhere in the forest, regardless of how deep they are in that forest. So you don't need to be 3" deep in a forest to get a benefit. Whole base in just behind the edge of the forest is enough for that specific model to gain concealment. It's also +2 DEF against ranged attacks. Not +2 DEF in general

Sorry if I'm a bit late to the part on this (or reviving a dead thread)
I'm having a bit of difficulty reconciling part 1 and 3 of the Forest rule, namely:
"When drawing line of sight to or from a point within the forest, the line of sight can pass through up to 3" of forest without being blocked. Anything more is blocked" - Would this be interpreted as simply "sections of forest more than 3" block LOS" ?
and
"a model can see 3" into or out of a forest"
The question I'm ultimately looking for answers on is this: Can a model in a forest and within 2" of the forest edge draw LOS to model 5" from the same forest edge? (shooting, charge, etc)

(shooting, charge, etc) The answer to your final question is "yes". It does indeed mean something like "sections of forest", but note that you can never see from outside one edge of a forest to outside the other, even if the whole forest is only 1" wide. The 3" to the edge (or to the other model inside the same forest) only applies when either the source or the target are inside the forest.

(shooting, charge, etc) Think of it this way: if you can draw any line between the bases of two models that passes through less than 3" of forest (so e.g. 2" of forest is fine) and does not pass through a forest from one side to the other, then there is line-of-sight between the two models. Of course other LOS rules may need to be applied; for example if one model is fully in the other model's back arc then the second model does not have line-of-sight to the first, etc.
