Hey everyone, I decided, as I experiment with protectorate I will be posting my battle reports and list/idea musings on here. Circle has just not been super exciting for me as of late (bones is really the only way to play and I don't want to buy a bajillion scarsfells) But Protectorate has a whole smorgasbord of options and play-styles. Maybe not all of them are optimal, but they all seem strong enough to play and use and still win games.
Right now I am experimenting with Durst, Thyra, and Testament for my first serious Protectorate Pairing. Durst is a for sure, I have been loving the list I am currently using with him (will post in a bit) But thyra and testament are a tough choice for me. Ill try to cover the pro's and cons of each based on my limited experience and how they fill out my pairing with durst.
First off lets talk about my favorite Medium based Caster!
Anston Durst!
My durst list started out as the following:
(Durst 1) Anson Durst, Rock of the Faith [+28]
- Castigator [12]
- Reckoner [16]
- Reckoner [16]
- Sanctifier [14]
- Hierophant [0(3)]
High Paladin Dartan Vilmon [0(6)]
Vassal Mechanik [1]
Choir of Menoth (max) [6]
Idrian Skirmishers (max) [15]
- Idrian Skirmisher Chieftain & Guide [0(5)]
Idrian Skirmishers (max) [15]
- Idrian Skirmisher Chieftain & Guide [0(5)]
The idea was to create a solid answer to most gunlines. Def 14, arm 21 jacks that cannot be knocked down, are immune to either spells or non magical ranged attacks make up the core of the list. Why am I not running creators might? Well because durst cannot run more than 3 jacks himself. Even 3 is a struggle for him! (Focus 6 is bad). I considered running him in EI, but he does very little for exemplar in general and his control is too small to really leverage decel in an infantry heavy army. In order to solve the conundrum of what else I should put in the List I decided to run with double idrians. I know its super lame an mainstream, but idrians are arguably one of the best units in the game just by ebing so darn versatile. Need to kill something on the charge? Hey we got Pow 12-14's need something dead at range? Hey we got pow 11-13 attacks with CRA. Need to survive a round or 2 of shooting? We got a minifeat for that? How about charging infantry? repo 3 and range 10 baby! Overall I have come to truly love idrians and its hard for me to make a faithful masses list without them now.
List functionality:
The list preformed admirably in my first few games, but I found myself struggling to contest in the larger scenarios (spread the net/recon/standoff) and still leverage my key abilities (decel and bullwark) That jacks hit like a freight train and they are very hard to remove. Def 14 is just really strong and 14/23 under feat is even harder to shift. Sadly though, ashen veil is living only (BOOOOOO) and so there are some games where I feel like its not even an existent rule on the card. It was around my 4th game with this list that The ADR came out, and I realized that not only could I shore up the bad match ups with Specialists, but I could also create an overall more versatile version of the list (which was already fairly versatile) and maintain the option to go more into a heavy brick if need be.
I present to you List number 2!

I'm still working on the specialists but otherwise I have found this version of the list to be much more versatile. I sacrifice a bit of hitting power for the durability, and versatility of the Champions. They really are a pain to remove. Arm 22 under decel, threatening up to 18" with righteous vengeance and boundless charge! They make excellent contesting pieces and can finish off targets my idrians have CRA'd. I have found the champions to be almost a neccessity in the majority of my match ups. The issue is...I lose a reckoner, and losing the boosted pow 16 at range is rough based on how the list plays. Luckily in addition to the champs versatility, I get to take the book for free! This means I have super sweet spell denial and against casters like like to play forward or into the hordes match ups, I can shut down a decent amount of the middle of the board.
So far I have won most the games I have played with Durst. With the majority of the Losses being to Gaston over on the Minions forums. I have not lost since adding the champions however and I feel this is because of how strong champions are.
I really think durst Is a very strong caster and I feel there is more to him than his kit lets on. Gaston has some super sexy tech with Flame bringers and I have seen some hilarious dervish spam lists with him to run a sort of def skew. Ill be exploring him more as I grow my collections, But right now I am enjoying playing him in Faithfull masses as I feel this theme Fixes a lot of my typical issues with him.
Ill be discussing more later but it is late and I am starting to ramble haha.
