So had my first game in Minions running Maelok. I just love tough as nails incorporeal undead gators. So list arrangement is Maelok with a Wrastler, Swamphorror, Boneswarm and free Snapper. He's surrounded by 2 full gators each with a free witch doctor. A full unit of croaks and a Bokor. The list is rounded out with Kwaak and his little buddy plus the chef.
I'm up against the double kitty kat makeda2 list reasonably standard issue. She's brought Legends, Rhadeim, Tibbers, Krea, Ellish and the usual support for the kats. (TyCom, willbreakers...)
Scenario is Pit II. I win the roll off and go first. Terrain to note is a house center zone. We both deploy symmetrically, with my croaks to the left of the house.
My Turn 1. Witch doctors both death ride. Maelok makes everyone undead and puts soul harvester up on right gators. Everyone runs to just out of threat of the kitty kats. Turn 1. My opponent runs Makeda right up the middle of the table behind the house surrounds herself in kitties and jams some into my croaks.
My Turn 2. Maelok upkeeps soul havest, feats, Mortalities the right kitties and finally makes everyone undead. I forget I can unjam the croaks but burn a stay death plus set a couple of kitties on fire otherwise they dirdle about. The horror eats through a few more stay deaths thanks to Mortality and the wrastler does the same. Makeda is now out of stay deaths. So soul harvest gators charge in and havest up all the cats from his left unit and leave a spot for the boneswarm to land next to Makeda through the house....it doesn't kill her. Turn 2. Kats jump up and down ineffectively against ARM22. Legends and Tycoms get some work done and RFP a gator or 3. Tibbers flattens the boneswarm.
My Turn3. I can get the wrastler to Makeda but she's full camp. Even with 5 souls I just can't force enough stay deaths and I miss the bokor stationary on her which means the wrastler can't burn through her transfers. She lives again! Turn 3. Legends RFP more gators, stabs the wrastler which Enlivens away from tibbers. Wrastler takes a bunch of free strikes but lives. Tycom removes the Bokors head. Remaining kats jump up and down ineffectively.
My turn4. Maelok rages the wrastler, mortalities the legends. Swamp horror goes after the legends Makeda keeps them alive. Wrastler eats Tibbers and the remaining gators eat a few cats. Turn4. He's got 2 cats and Rhadeim left. I've kindly walked Maelok out for behind his safe hiding place and left a landing spot for all 3. Maelok has no camp, so Makeda does her thing, dash, feat, stormrage. He goes down easily speared by Rhadeim. Oh man alive!!
Thoughts. So mortality mortality mortality.. its a spell I love to hate. In hindsight I didn't need to worry about the legends. After the wrastler ate Tibbers the game was mine I was up 2-0 on scenario. Maelok probably needs the soul slave not Kwaak but I did like being able to save the wrastler from a tibber thumping. Finally forgetting to unjam my croaks also cost me.
Thanks for reading.

Uhm, you know that Mortality stops Stay Death? Or am I misunderstanding what happend? But usually this should be as good a matchup as it can be. Mortality shuts down Stay Death completely, the cats are not that effective against Posse anyway and there are a bunch of souls to collect. High Defence against shooting / magic can become a problem as the Soul Slave will have severe problems to hit his Mortality and even Maelok needs high boosted rolls. But as soon as you land the spell, almost everything in the Makeda list should melt.

Okay game 2 So list arrangement is the same: Maelok with a Wrastler, Swamphorror, Boneswarm and free Snapper. He's surrounded by 2 full gators each with a free witch doctor. A full unit of croaks and a Bokor. The list is rounded out with Kwaak and his little buddy plus the chef. I'm today against Krueger2 running a Bones list. Sudo-gunline guardian, 2xwaldens, 3xwyrds, Celestial Fulcrum, 2xSentry Stones, 2xStoneshaper, Wayfarer and a Gallows Grove. Scenario is Spread the net. I win the roll off and go first. He takes the side with a trench for Kruger toeing the middle zone and we have a house center zone. I deploy as normal symmetrically, with my croaks to the left of the house. He counter deploys the BE and 2 wryds against my croaks and stacks his wolds against my zone. Sentry stones to both sides of the house and the grove behind it. My Turn 1. So up against a scenario caster in a very active scenario!!! Run run run. Witch doctors both death ride. Maelok makes everyone undead and gets up the board behind the house. Croaks run into his zone, I end up right in the face of the sentry stones. I spread the shamblers out blocking TKs. Turn 1. Manikins spray my croaks to bits, put some hurt on the bokor he burns a shambler. BE lights up a couple of gators but can't break armor. Wyrds clear more croaks and chip away at the gators. On the other side of the house he TKs the horror turning it around, sprays a few more points onto the bokor and runs his wolds up, guardian leading the way. Krueger2 ends in a trench camping some. My Turn 2. Fire goes out on one gator, fire damage then chips a few more points off the other gator. 6 dead croaks become shamblers right on the other side of the house looking at Krueger2 in the trench. Maelok feats, makes everyone undead and forgets to rage the snapper. Left side gators charge through the manikins but leave both the stone and one of the wyrd on a few boxes, the other is undamaged. Bull snapper charges the stone and flubs its damage roll. Last remaining croaks find an angle and manage to chip the last few box off the stone. Centre zone the bokor ghost through the house and floods Krueger and his support with shamblers they can't hit a barn door. Right hand gators put a few points into the guardian and jam the flag and the wolds. Bone swarm eats the other sentry stone, horror gets to the grove. Otherwise I've got my wrastler in my zone and the chef on my flag. Turn 2. The BE kills off some shamblers the remaining croaks and chips some more damage onto the gators. The wryds manage to clear off the gators in his zone giving him the point. Learnt that gun fighter doesn't trigger unyielding . Krueger feats but can't get my chef of the my flag. He backs Krueger out of the zone as he is still facing a handfull of shamblers. Wold TKs my boneswarm around but stomp ineffectively on it and the gators. Guardian goes into the centre zone in front of Krueger. Score 2-1 to me. My Turn3. Goal for this turn is attrition. Snapper frenzies and chips some damage from a gator, add more shamblers to Kruegers face. Bokor burns all the shamblers getting the guardian down to 8 boxes. Maelok rages the horror, DPs and hides in the zone. Horror eats both the guardian and walden after dragging them in. Wrastler eats the other walden. Score 4-1. Turn 3. He fails to clear off the gators from his zone and can't stop me scoring my flag on his and my turn we call the game. Thoughts. Clock management was an issue, my feat turn took too long! I got fixated on removing that sentry stone after flubbing a few rolls. Maelok was very safe all game hiding behind his personal cloud and house cutting off any TK business. Croaks did a great job of getting right in his face which got me into his zone turn 1 , okay they all died but then became shamblers that kept Krueger and his support busy. Horror was superb raged with the 4' drags. Hopefully not to many errors this game thanks for reading.

Hopefully not to many errors this game thanks for reading. One thing I did notice is that the Bokor only gets corpses from living models, so there is a bit of skornergy with Maelok's Death Pact. Nice battle report otherwise

Cauldron should help with the corpses and can also fill up the Boneswarm (who is relatively pointless without corpses)

Yeah I'm looking forward to the model getting released and swamping the snapper for the cauldron for exactly that reason. If/when I had a blindwalker I'd probably give that a roll too. Still I'm not giving up on the bone swarm just yet

Game 3 List arrangement slightly changed up: Maelok with a Wrastler, Swamphorror, Boneswarm. He's surrounded by 2 full gators each with a free witch doctor. A full unit of croaks and a Bokor. The list is rounded out with Kwaak and his little buddy plus the chef and the new addition a straight swap of snapper for the Boil Master & Cauldron. I'm today against another Bones list this time Bradigus running a beast brick. guardian, 2xwaldens, 3xwights, 3xwatchers, 2xShifting stones, 2xSentry Stones, 2xStoneshaper, 2xWayfarer. Scenario is Spread the net again!!. I loose the roll off and go second. House again occupies center ground. Not much to choose between sides given that sprays ignore the terrain and all his stuff has pathfinder. Setup My typical setup (Snapper+Razorback are proxies for Boil Master+Pot). I need get up the board fast and keep my heavies alive to go after his heavies. Turn 1. My opponent runs aggressively with his beast brick. Makes sure his Sentry Stones are safe, feeds me a few manikins. Sticks Bradigus up the table, synergy+mystic ward go up. My Turn 1. I run the croaks into trying to tie down his brick looking to prevent turn 2 feat, gators follow up. On my right I put the gators into two lines. Cauldron delivers some corpses to the boneswarm. Maelok and the beasts huddle behind the house and I foolishly eat a couple of his manikins. Chef on the flag. [End of 1] Turn2. Bradigus goes right up the table behind the house a spanks a croak, Manikins spray down more croaks unjamming his wight. Wight kills a few more croaks sets another couple on fire. Watchers go either side of the house and stone form. Other watcher with Synergy managed to put a gator in the dirt and he sets up for my feat. My Turn 2. I get fixated on the assassination right away. Something about Bradigus being in range of the horror and bone swarm camping 2. I figure they got this.... Maelok makes everyone undead, feats and rages both horror and swarm camping 0. Croaks drop the sentry stone, Gators charge through watcher free strikes bouncing but can't hit bradigus but drop one wight. Bone swarm charges Bradigus hits the charge attack which gets transfered, I miss the second attack needing 8s and now I realise how dicey the assassination was. Horror goes in and gets rid of the last transfer but has no fury to finish him off. My dice give up on the right hand side and I can't kill the Sentry stone with the gators and then have the bright idea of throwing the watcher at the stone. I fail to break armour on the collateral damage. Kwaak enlivens both heavies. I score 1. [End of 2] Turn3. Its my opponents turn to now get fixated on the Assassination with Maelok camping zero. He spends an age figuring out how to unjam his watcher and get the easy kill. Unfortunately for me he maths it out, that he can't kill the horror with Bradigus. He switches back to attrition. With Synergy up he clears of most of the gators, eats the swarm. Importantly he has to use Bradigus to un jam himself and toes the zone. My wrastler enlivens out from a watcher but takes a trip6 to the face. He can't clear my or his zones as my witch doc toughs and score goes to 1-1. He's well under 20mins on his clock. My Turn3. I'm way down on attrition now, but see a better assassination option this time. Boil Master and Cauldron are within 15 of Bradigus as he's toeing the zone, they spirit-lash him forward 3 into range of a mortality from Maelok followed up by a drag from the 'raged' horror and chomp chomp. Assassination win. I had to hilariously kill my own Cauldron to get Maolok into LOS of Bradigus.. Could have avoid that entire nonsense with better placement. [End of Game] Thoughts. This was always going to be uphill so I jumped hard at the assassination both times but honestly turn 2 was way way off, better Maths required!!. I would have been much better off try to clear his watchers and a wights, which would have dented synergy somewhat. His Turn 2, Bradigus another couple of inches further back and the only thing that could have beaten him would have been his clock. Thanks for reading.

Minion Game 4
I had my Maelok list paired with a Dr A list running 4 warhogs, 3 gunboars, battleboar, splatterboar, targ, orin, alton, Lanyssa, min bone grinders.
My opponent was pairing a Madrak 1 double champ lists with a Kolgrima beast brick list. I didn't feel Maelok had game into Kolgrima so dropped Dr A. My first time with Dr A. He picks Kolgrima she's bringing Mulg, 2xBrawlers, Earthborn, Mauler, and Ice Troll, full stone and his winter buddy, shaman, runebearer and welps.
Scenario is The Pit II with a wood center table, one side of the table has some more woods and rough ground, other side has a handy wall. I win roll yay and go first. I get the side with the woods and rough ground.
Setup I put 2 war hog either side of Dr A the gunboars & splatterboar stacked to the left sprinkled with solos targ herding the group of gunboars. Alton hiding out in one of the woods. Kolgrima puts a brawler each side the earthborne and mulg to my left and the mauler to my right with the troll.
My Turn 1 Dr A goes first and puts forced evolution on one warhog, dumps the rest and moves up the board. Hogs get into the rectangle zones, gunboars run around a forest looking at mulg. I forget to move Alton. Turn 1 My opponent moves up Kolgrima and feat all my guns(except alton cause I forgot to move him) and hogs 2' back fills the stone up. The brawler to my right positions aggressively for a trade with the mauler behind and on my left the other 3 beasts huddle behind the handy wall
My Turn 2 I can get one hog onto Kolgrima(camping 2) but with no shooting this turn due to his feat, I pass on the run. On attrition I'll be throwing both hogs away on my left to get one earthborn. But on my right I can trade my forced evolution hog for a mauler, so I start there. Alton pops a few points on the mauler behind the now dead brawler. Dr A goes and primal shocks the stone thrice failing to crack armor twice and once it toughs blah. I get out of mulg+spray range. On my left I shuffle my pigs back a bit to get out of threat of his stuff. Bone grinders screen the right hand hog. Turn 2 Shanan chills forced evolution hog, runeB tags it with hunters mark. Mulg plods over and puts it into the dirt. Last brawler runs over to cover Mulg. Kolgrima puts a cloud wall in front of my left pigs using the wood as an anchor. Earthborn durdles into the centre zone away from his zone. Ice troll toes my zone kills a bone grinder and crit stationaries the warhog. 0-0
My Turn 3 I can score 3 if I can clear the troll. Alton tags it for a few points, bone grinders finish it off handily. Dr A can't get out of spray range so I camp 3 not before handing out forced evolution on the now un-stationary hog and lucky shots onto the guns boars. Battleboar primals hog, hog smashes Brawler toeing my zone. Gun boars move into clouds and gun down the runebearer and some stone dudes. Left hand hog smashes his objective. 3-0 Turn 3 Koligrima moves up and sprays down the grinders. Mauler drops the forced evolution hog, my opponents dice die on him as his earthborn and mulg fail to kill a single gun boar all lined up for him. 3-0
My Turn 4 I need to clear off the shaman in my zone and earthborn toeing his. Both war-hogs make short work of his earthborn and alton pops the shaman allowing the battleboar to run into my zone for the win 5-0.
Thoughts This was a close game, the koligrima assassination was ugly with mulg. Thankfully I had first turn that helped a lot. Cloud walls are a thing that means the grinder might need to go... I think Mulg needed to die turn 2 but I was worried about him crit smitting my hog so I went for the brawler instead... perhaps I should have fished for the crit KD on the tusks.. anyway options.

Minion Game 5
Playing in a 3 list match practice for my friend going to the Welsh Open. I had Sturm&Dang , Dr A and Maelok lists. One of each of the themes. My opponent was running Coven all the banes in Dark hosts,Black Industry slayer spam and Asphyxious1 all the Satyxis in Scourge theme. I was expecting slayer spam and wanted to see if Maelok could cope. He dropped Asphyxious1 all the Satyxis instead! Maelok in Blindwater Theme - Soul slave (free) - Wrastler - Horror 2xMax Gators 1xMax Croaks 1xBokor & Shamblers 1xGobber Bellows Crew 1xBoil Master & Pot (free) Mistspeaker Thrulg (free) Witch Doc Kwaak
| Asphyxious1 in Scourge of the Broken Coast - Barathrum - Deathripper - Deathripper 2xGunslingers 2xMax Raiders + Witch 1xMax Blood Witches + Hag 1xMin Blood Witches + Hag Severa Blacktide
|
Scenario is Outlast with a house center table, the right hand zone has a cloud the other a forest. Trench system on one side of the board, hill on the other. I win roll and go first, he chooses the trench and ambushed the min witches. Setup Soul Slave, Croaks, Cauldron and Bokor&Shamblers go for the right zone. Maelok, bellows, Wrastler, Horror and the two posse go left. Thrulg behind the house. He puts a unit of raiders on each side. big unit of witches goes opposite my posse . Barathrum goes behind the house. Rippers, Gunslingers and Severa hang with Asphyxious centre table. My Turn 1Maelok makes sure he's out of 24 from the rippers put soul harvester on the far left gators. Everything runs. Gator get into one zone, croaks stay out of threat of witches in the other zone. Thrulg pokes out from behind the house. Cauldron gives 3 corpses to the bokor. Turn 1My opponent puts Barathrum behind the forest in the left zone while witches and Raiders stay out of threat of gators. His raiders on my right push aggressively against the croaks with whipping winds up. Gunslingers go into the trench while Severa lurks back field. Asphyxious and his ripper palls durdle up putting scything touch on a raider to my left. My Turn 2Feat turn for sure. Bellows crew make a cloud against the house maelok goes behind it and death pack+feat. Soul slave moves behind the house through the shamblers and croaks to land a mortality onto the aggressively positioned raiders. Croaks run charge but can only reach 3 mostly due to a wall in the way. All 3 witches go down. Shamblers flood the spaces and bokor hides behind the cloud. Central gator unit run to engage gunslingers at which point Barathrum counter charges. He fails to kill the gator, but he's now in range of the horror that can tramples up. Horror boosts a tentacle, drags him back for the wrastler to beat on. The the last unit of gators finish Barathrum and bully the zone prepping up for ambushers. Thrulg runs to engage Asphyxious. Turn 2Witches ambush left. Gunslingers kill Thrulg but it takes both units. Rippers can't go anywhere exciting so Asphyxious puts out parasite on the central posse, feats and after all's done he's hellfire'd one posse to death and a few croaks have blighted to death. Raiders to my right finish off 6 more croaks. I lose another parasite'd gator to the raiders. The witches thrash on the left hand gators getting two more eventually. Severa then chain attack - vortex blasts the wrastler pulling in bellow crew maelok and the horror, killing both crew in the damage! Mistspeaker scores on my flag and bodies contest his 1-0. My Turn 3Horror doesn't frenzy. Add 9 Shamblers who then flood forward, CMA'ing all the raiders out of the right hand zone. Last few croaks durdle in the back of the zone to score. Soul slave comes left and mortalities the left hand raiders. Horror with his tentacles clears of 3 mortality'd raiders and then Kwaak venoms 5 more, clearing a path to the back field. The parasite'd gators get to the gunslingers , ripper and Severa, they hit Severa and she dies and ding up the ripper. Last unit of gators beats on the sea of blood witches kills a couple, souls to Maelok. Wrastler rumbles forward contests flag. Maelok scores the flag 3-0 to winions. Turn 3Blood witches clear off all the left hand gators & gunslingers clear off two more parasite'd gators. He contests the right hand zone but concedes before passing turn as he can't score. He has nothing to remove the wrastler or sea of shamblers contesting his flag. Scenario win ThoughtsFirst turn how key is it to setting the line of engagement? My opponent in hindsight agreed that he was way to passive with the raiders and witches to my left and mis-ambushed defiantly should have waited a round. I like having this combined arms list rather than the conventional wisdom of maxing out the gators.. I feel they only last so long so having a bit or recursion with the bokor keeps the list breathing. Croaks project lots of threat and with gang and mortality they do okay in melee.

Really good write up, I enjoy seeing minions doing well. I will make a comment on your point about the difference between the four posse build and what you are running here. I feel like both of them can be super aggressive and most of my wins with the list come from scenario as you can just shut them out with the swarm of bodies and if that is solely what you are going for the more the merrier. As for the Bokour I actually used to run one in my list as well before I swapped it out for a 4th unit of posse. I found that I didn't get the recursion I wanted out of him. With Death Pact making the Gators undead and Snacking RFP'ing enemy models there just wasn't much for him to get corpses off of, glad to see he is working out for you though.

Minion Game 6
Playing a rematch of 4 Dr A in WWFF - Targ (free) - Warhog - Warhog - Warhog - Battleboar - Gunboar - Gunboar - Gunboar - Splatterboar 1xGobber Bellows Crew Alton (free) Totemhunter (free) Lanyssa (free) Chef Dahlia Hallyr & Skarath | Kolgrima in Storm of the North - Runebearer - Mulg, - Brawler - Brawler - Earthborn - Mauler - Winter troll 1x Krielstone Bearers & Northkin Elder Welps Northkin Shaman
|
Scenario is Pit II with a house center table, the right hand zone has a acid bath the other a forest. Hand wall on one side of the table. I get first turn and my opponent takes the side with the wall. I'll give an abridged version as this essentially played out almost identically to my game 4. First 2 turns are cagey with Kolgrima advancing slowly behind the cloud wall after I'd got to the zones turn 1. Top of Turn 3 I score 3 after removing his objective and an earthborn contesting my zone. His Turn 3 he's unable to kill forced evolution'ed Skarath with a brawler or burn through Dahlia's transfers with magic sprays. My Turn 4, I clear both zones again to win 5-0 Thoughts Kolgrima going second meant that she never got the stone aura up beyond minimum as she was dishing out 4 clouds a turn. Skarath is hard to kill at DEF 16 no KD. Not sure about Lanyssa, perhaps Kwaak dishing out enliven so I can make the trades harder.

Minion Game 7
Friend and I have a quick game at our local store, prior demo'ing battlebox games to some folk. I wanted to try out my Midas WWFF list and it was against his Skorne either Mak2 or Rasheth. I asked him to choose Makeda 2 swordspam list ?!? Midas - Soul Slave (free) - Warhog - Warhog - Battleboar - Battleboar - BoneSwarm Max Nyss Max Boomhowlers Cauldron & Boil Master Min Bone Grinders Totem Hunter (free) MistSpeaker Lynessa | Makeda 2 (MoW) - Molik Karn - Krea Max Swordsmen + UA Max Swordsmen + UA Max Ferox Legends Tycom (free) Tycom (free) Willbreaker Willbreaker (free) Orin
|
Spread the Net with a forest center table, One side has a trench system in its zone, the other a house in its zone. I win dice roll and choose to go first my opponent takes the trench side. SetupNyss & mist speaker go opposite his zone, boomhowlers go opposite my zone. Beasts either side of Midas , the grinders and Cauldron. My opponent puts swordsmen either side, ferox up the middle. Totem Hunter preys the krea which is hold-up with the swordsmen opposite the nyss. My Turn 1Run everything up, staying out of ferox threat except the totem hunter which I inexplicably put into threat of 2 ferox. Cauldron gives boneswarm 1 corpse. Turn 12 Ferox take down the totem hunter and repo into the nyss. Swordsmen huddle around the krea on my left, on the right they move up out of threat of the boomhowlers. My Turn 2Nyss kill one cat but can't kill the other. Cauldron gives Midas 2 corpses which he uses to get a calamity off on the left swordsmen. The boneswarm walks in on them and eats through Makeda's stay deaths. Primaled warhog overtakes through 4 more but misses 2 attacks! Finally Boomhowlers and bone grinder jam. Turn 2Makeda feats, Molik removes the warhog, swordsmen take off the boneswarm. Cats jump over the boomhowlers and remove 3 trivially. Swordsmen now charge through the hole and clear off 4 more. Legends kill all bone grinders. No score My Turn 3Cauldron gives Midas 3 corpses. Mist speaker kills out of command cat and scores flag. Nyss shoot swordsmen but tough no-kd and stay death mean only one goes down. Midas calamities right hand swordsmen, Battleboar lives the dream and beserks through 3 swordsmen out of Mak's stay death but then it all ends when I bump into one in range. Warhog remove both cats. I've got nothing left to jam the legends as both my boosted hex blasts shots have scatter off them. I score 2-0 Turn 3Makeda cast dash, legends charge through to Midas and put him in the dirt. Skorne WinThoughts God damn the boomhowlers are bad value against anti-tough troops. Nyss I liked them they got work done, the cauldron as pointed out didn't really add much value but neither did the soul slave, there was no call for battlelust and the hex blasts all scatter harmlessly. Beast package wasn't too bad although the boneswarm.. was the weakest part. All in all a horrible matchup but no better way of testing a list.

Have you considered two Valkyrie units in place of the Boomhowlers. Fewer bodies, but they're a lot tougher, have better output, and they can protect your Nyss from shots they themselves can tank. Also means all your infantry have Vengeance.
