Arcane ward goes on the raiders to really make them shine as a jamming unit. Backed up by the winter troll to help clear them off from other jamming units.
2 units of bears help shrink the field, and because they are bears.
The champions can gain arcane ward after your raiders do their job and you are ready to commit them to the fight.
Borka can also bully the board as he will also have the same tech as the champions thanks to the ornery animus. Borka also has the added bonus of crit pitch, and stumbling drunk.
For heavy hitting you still have rok and a brawler. The lack of pathfinder is a glaring weakness but you can always gain that via objectives.
It's a very honest list, but that's borka1 for you. I feel that you at least make the most of his toolkit. You won't be tearing up the tournament scene, but hey you can play with all your new holiday toys.
Last Edit: Dec 24, 2017 3:44:47 GMT by cuberic: Checked warroom and found that moshpits duration is only turn, not round. Just as you think something is going to have some fun interaction. Oh well
Borka 1 never really excites me anymore, but i dojoed a very similar list recently and it feels perfect for playing against ppl with less experience than you. Borka is "hard but fair" which is a bad place to be competitively speaking, but he has some fairly strong effects and he can play a solid game. You are probably better off with many other casters, but he is good enough. Kind of like Mardak 3...
I do not agree Trollock about Borka1's competitiveness. I think he has tools other troll casters don't have and he has answers to different kind of opponents. For example he is quite good answer to Denny3 while Madrak's infantry are just wiped away. Arcane ward is situational spell, but can be game-changing.
I made really similar list, that goes to testing next: Borka Kegslayer - WB: +28 - Keg Carrier - Rök - PC: 19 (Battlegroup Points Used: 19) - Pyre Troll - PC: 8 (Battlegroup Points Used: 8) - Dire Troll Mauler - PC: 15 (Battlegroup Points Used: 1)
Brawler in stead of Mauler would actually be good for extra SPD. I wanted to have pyretroll on list, so Borka himself can threat heavies (p+s19) cos he is really tough lock and can be played quite forward. Because I have pyre troll, I took sorcerer on champs and drop second bears to fire-eaters. Disbinding, magic weapons, extra magic-missile and extra wounds are all really nice abilities to have.
I would play the same list, but then with kolgrima. Owl's wisdom works the same as arcane ward and she has way more action on the table imho.
Owl's wision don't add DEF and Kolgrima is significant softer to kill. But if she works your playstyle, go for it. But Borka works better on my play style.
Kolgrimmas couds sort of adds DEF though. If you stand in them you get -2 to hit, and they can block LoS so you cant be attacked at all...
Actually, this thread sort of rekindled my urge to play Borka 1. I have so many things i want to play, but borka at POW 19 sounds like it could be a real thing. He can contribute to attrition significantly at that point, and that changes many match ups. You sort of have an extra heavy.
Hmmm Borka1 actually seems somewhat improved in mkIII, I like Arcane Ward more than Iron Flesh. I understand it's a significant come down, even at -1, but I don't missing the -1 to SPD. Warding against spells can be useful more often than not. The bump to the Keg Carrier's speed is a nice quality of life improvement. It's a shame he lost Brain Damage, but I don't think I ever saw that come into play.
With Fenn's gaining Cleave, and Reposition 3", and Champs gaining a DEF buff it seems like he would be more competitive than ever.
Other than everybody spamming armor at the beginning of mkIII (something he offers little to no help with) I'm not seeing a reason to not like him. Am I missing something?
When you have the rules, pound the rules. When you have the facts, pound the facts. When you have neither the rules nor the facts, pound the table really loudly, and make as much noise as possible.
Borka 1 had one thing going for him in MK2 though. He was IMPOSSIBLE to kill. I had a game where Stryker 2 overloaded for 15, feated and charged (with no need to spend focus to get extra range). Then he had feat attacks from old rowdy, a storm clad and 5 hammer dwarfs. He just barely killed Borka who was camping 2. It was absolutely bat shit crazy fun.
He is still hard to kill, but not nearly as much. His other kit is slightly improved id say, but he no longer has that one thing where he is bonkers.
Borka1 abilities/Feat, MK2 to MK3 transition, appears to have basically remained similar. (Arcane Ward in MK3, with a reduction in Purification type effects, is a bonus)
Alas, global game changes around him have rendered him far, far less effective as an army leader:
1. The general down-grading of infantry-generated melee damage. 2. The change to 'No power attacks to friendlies' eliminated a sure-fire damage boost aspect of his Feat (eg. Bull Rushing LRs into one or more of their own). Unless an opponent happens to politely situate their models ideally for power attacks. His Feat is currently a 10" (now 12" w/ Runebearer) auto-hitting Hunter's Mark-plus, a situational movement buff. Beasts only gain 'Forcing-Free' Power Attacks, NOT charges. 3. Reduction, as listed above, of survival tech for him personally, to enable a calculated bait-with-Borka tactic. 4. Increased presence of magical gun tech (objective choice, solos, etc.) vs. Wind Wall
One change to his Feat would re-assert him as an interesting-to-play warlock, and a force to be reckoned with. Add: "Friendly Faction models beginning a charge, slam, power attack, or trample gain +2" of movement AND TRASH".
Completely gutted by Steady/no-KD effects, requires the charge/slam/power attack/trample condition be met, but Butcher1-esque in the right situation(s) for one turn.
that I posted earlier. Cryx started so he get pressure on and troops fast to my face. But Raiders hold themselves quite well on one flank against bane knights thanks to def13. Champions do really good job against bane-riders thanks to retaliation strike and spellward (def buff didn't matter against cavalry charge). But I think my enemy was too greedy and would have done better by not doing impacts. Bears and Fire eaters do good job against bane warriors. Asphy feated and tried to kill Borka but stumbles were on my side and he got only 4 banes to Borka and half of them missed (and run out of time too). Then RÖK charged Asphy.
But overall I really liked that list and free upkeep lets Borka to do more stuff. And Mosh pit do quite same than take-down I lose from BoH theme. For next game I would consider changing Champios hero to Valka, as champions rely on deff and have only 1" melee. And Valka can protect also Raiders. And he also have magical weapons that were problem for me as I only have them on Bokra and Champions (and needed them to both flanks). I might also change Mauler and cheff to Brawler, because northkin stone, reach and ornery (and I also have primal if necessary).
