Click bait successful!
The "it" I am talking about is leaving PoD with Doomy 2 to get Rök. Berserk + overtake is an incredible combo as we all know, and Rök is a pretty damned nice beast in general. I will cost you though, both in the form of free solos and in the form of useful them force benefits. PoD has only semi useful theme benefits, but SotN has pretty bad ones when playing an army mostly made up from beasts.
The premise is that you probably want mostly beasts in your army because of... doomy 2. I decided to simplify the problem by assuming that your list will consist of two parts. One that you will play no matter the theme, and one block that is theme specific.
My list would always contain the following:
Mulg
Mauler
Axer
Maxed stone with elder
Whelps
Runebearer (or other "free" solo)
Then, on PoD i would add:
Mauler
2 EBDTs
Janissa (or other free solo)
In SotN i would add:
Rök
2 units of Bears
So this simplifies the problem a bit. Rök is obviously better than a second Mauler. 2 EBDTs and Janissa are better than 2 units of bears (or at least they cost significantly more), but may it not be worth it for the obscene awesomeness that is Rök with boosted attacks, berserk and overtake eating a unit of infantry and then killing a heavy at the end of the chain? The bears even have super nice synergy with the overtake-plan since they tend to encourage an opponent to bunch up in the middle of the table. The theme bonuses are probably slightly in favor of PoD but i is very slightly.
Doomy 2 seems to be our most "solved" caster when it comes to list building. I think it is worth asking if it is not worth trying the Rök-setup at least. It changes him from being sort of weak to infantry to being absolutely great against infantry, and he is still very strong against heavies. Ambush is an amazing tool to have, especially since our beast bricks are generally weak against being surrounded. The bears are amazing even without any kind of caster support, and could do a similar job to what the EBDTs do. They are pretty fast and punch pretty hard and are pretty hard to kill.
Could be worth it
