Friend of mine is playing games at my house. He's a newcomer to the game, and I am loaning/building a Retribution force for him to play (as that was the army that looked the coolest to him). He digs the Dawnguard quite a bit.
So I get that the Dawnguard theme isn't exactly lighting the world on fire at the moment, but are there any common builds out there? What caster(s) would be good to focus on?

Personally I’m expirmenting with Kaelyssa with sentinels and invictors. Her feat gives stealth and can’t be charged, which hopefully delivers them. Most things die when you deliver charging sentinels. Invictors don’t hit quite as hard, but they are flexible. Hopefully I can put a list to table soon and see how it plays out.
Consider Issyria who can give longer charges and stop some shooting with her spells, or Elara who can give charge distance plus ghostly on feat and has armor and defense debuffs to make them hit harder and more often.

Joking aside until the new jacks are released i don't think the builds will settle down much. A core of 2x sentinels is obviously good and the jack marshal bonus with a hydra is as good as it looks on paper, possibly better. Try this one out
Kaelyssa banshee manticor 2x sentinels w/UA dawnguard scyre hydra - marshaled 2x arcanists min nyss hunters
The min nyss hunters can be anything but i think an army must have something with inate pathfinder. I have played the core of the army a lot and it usually does fairly well for me.

2x units of sentinels and 2x harpies with Kaelyssa is a good place to start. Kaelyssa helps deliver sentinels like nobody else, and the harpies have tremendous synergy with phantom hunter. Kaelyssa's dispel is great all the time, too.
Elara's feat is great for dawnguard, and she can make them hit harder and more accurately with her spells. She also has a unique out for incorporeal and stealth with Marked for Death. She is also the best caster to take advantage of the jack marshal bonus: with scything touch, crush, and an Arcanist any of our lights hits as hard as a heavy without being too many points. I recommend the vyre lights since they can also take advantage of the ranged-focused abilities. The hydra is also great for this since it holds its focus.
I think there is room for a sweet Vyros2 list, but I'm not sure that's good for a new player.
I'd recommend Elara2 and kaelyssa, for sure.

Helynna with Dawnguards is strong.

At a recent Steamroller I ran Kaelyssa with double sentinels. It was super effective as long as you can deliver them properly. Sentinels are super strong and Kae covers their biggest weakness which is the delivery.

I've liked it with Elara since nothing she does cares about battlegroup. Vyros2 can do a solid mixed force with Leadership and Decel but he's not a fan of marshals for obvious reasons.

I would go with Elara 2, a Griffon on a Scyir can get to some pretty bonkers threat ranges. Righteous Vengeance (3") + Charge (9") + Boundless Charge (2") + Fleet (2") + Reach (2") = 18"
When he gets there he can Crush and spend his leftover 2 focus (charged for free due to boundless but paid for fleet), if he has scything touch and concentrate power as well he can get 4 x pow 19 attacks, plus a pow 15 shield if it is in range

I notice quite a few have suggested Kae for the delivery. My question to them would be; how do you handle the pathfinder issue? There seems to be a lot of terrain in the current time. I would imagine the sents would get bogged down easily.

Issyria double max invictors is one of the best lists atm. 26" threat range on 1B that ignores stealth and clouds, if needed. The enemy can basically move 5" during her 1st turn or lose two lights or units.

Aren't Invictors universally reviled though? Just curious
