Any love for steelhead rifles?
I feel they have potential - a POW11 CRA gun in a 10 man unit is nothing to sneeze at, and I feel -2 arm buff in 3-4 man CRAs (effect pow16-17) would push them into decent levels of damage for a 14pt unit.
Also gives cryx access to one of its few 10man ranged units, and being a mercenary is in any theme force. Nyss feel a little too expensive nowadays, and even with hunter, pathfinder and +1RAT it seems hard to justify their price.
Real competition is with Cephalyx Overlords: always hard to look past. But more shots, more bodies and potential to hurt harder targets give Riflemen an edge imo.
So has anyone used them with success? Have I wasted my money on someone else's rejects (cheap as they were)

Khador player here, just reading Cryx to learn the jank.
I think they are ok, but only ok. Combined arms is a sell for high def targets, but for an extra 2 points I prefer Croes Cutthroats.
Advance deploy, Pathfinder, stealth, backstab repo 5", a magical weapon and silence for 2 extra points? Yes pls.

Pretty much what lovehugs said. If I’m dipping into Mercs for a Ranged unit I’m probably taking Croe’s, even if it’s not with Scaverous for the sweet Telekinesis + Backstab Synergy.

Good point with croes, they are hard to turn down with the extra survivability and mobility for 2 pts.
I do back steelheads against harder targets (battle group) or multi wound solos though, where cra, reroll to hit and higher rifle pow help. But less sure how much cryx needs this capability.

I have never actually used them but I like them on paper. CRA is always a powerful ability in my opinion and we don't have much in the way of in faction friendly units that do that. But as it was pointed out, with our debuffs, is it something we need? I guess its more attractive than paying full price for Nyss Hunters, though they are typically worth it for the utility that strong ranged and weapon master in melee brings.
Benefits: 1. The steel heads are cheap for a ranged dedicated unit. 2. They reliably hit with CRA and rerolls. 3. They are versatile with CRAs being able to hit both high defense and hurt high armor.
Drawbacks: 1. They die in droves as the worlds squishiest single wound infantry, appropriate for their cost and ranged focus. 2. Probably not the best for any given roll, but are possibly the cheapest that can fill those rolls simultaneously.
So overall, seems to be a good investment if you want a single wound unit of dedicated ranged dudes.
