This might be a dumb question but, how bad is it really to play those points down? On the one hand it is said that many of the things we can get for free aren't worth the points, bit as soon as we can get it for free but don't we "hate loosing out on all those points". Uphill battles are part of these games. Is that all you end up with or does it really destroy your chances.
On a similar note, is KC really that bad good players generally won't win with it?

Thursday night game? KC is fine.
Steamroller, even local... I’m not bringing it. Literally no chance.

Uphill battles are part of these games. Is that all you end up with or does it really destroy your chances. On a similar note, is KC really that bad good players generally won't win with it? In KC specifically, I want 2x Fell Caller to help acquire melee competency when my required-by-Theme ranged units get engaged. The new improved Runebearer is nearly a must have in general. If my KC build cannot have 60pts of units (warbeast selection) I have the hard choice of which TWO solos only. If only one Fell Caller, a savvy opponent can know the incompetency of TB ranged infantry in melee combat and eliminate the singular buff source. Because it is ranged centric, KC also wants a max KSB+SSE or it faces the inability to address Stealth/Incorporeal enabled armies. MtK Rage, especially due to other ranged warbeast limitations, for ARM cracking is a necessity for fielding an 'all comers' list. (CID Slag animus, return to MK2..waiting.) Yes, good players can win with KC, my assassination-only builds have worked fine in casual play, but at the highest levels of competition? I prefer armies that have multiple paths, i.e. strategy and tactics, to victory against more diverse opposing armies. Consider compared to PoD, where the free solos are NOT requred to provide competency to the main Theme models, and to arrive at three free options is not ever a challenge.

If the theme benefits were worth playing 5-10 points down it might be okay to play with 2 free solos instead of 3. But, KC’s perks are absolutely the worst in faction and perhaps the game. I hate to say it but I have given up. I spent a lot of effort and thought trying to figure out a way to make it work. The closer I got to feeling like I had a good list the closer it got to becoming a far superior SotN list. KC is dead to me. Lol Thus the joke of using the superior Northkin models in KC to get +1 to the starting roll as opposed to the snowdrifts. I think the intent is that +1 to start is very strong and needs to be balanced with weaknesses elsewhere. Ghost Fleet is also very restrictive in list building, but those models actually work well together. It's not even the perks. Seeing through our own models is actually quite effective. The problem is that our ranged units, on the whole, are the worst of any faction.
