To give a brief introduction:
Circle is my main faction and I've been looking at branching out recently. I assembled a very small collection of Retribution and while I enjoyed the aesthetics, the first game I had with them was pretty unexciting. Part of it was certainly the difference in Focus vs Fury so I decided to stick to something I'm a little more familiar with. When I first picked up Warmahordes I primarily wanted a faction that wasn't represented and I knew I wanted living heavy warbeasts over big stompy robots. Trolls were being played by several others and Circle wasn't so Circle became my first faction. Now as a bonus a local friend is selling his stuff on the cheap which I will be slowly picking up over the coming months.
I have been immediately drawn to Madrak1 and the changes CID brought for him. I've built a list for him in Storm of the North so figured that would be a good place to start. The main issue I'm having is finding an appropriate battlegroup. I do have other concerns (mostly building a pairing and how to leave SotN behind since every time I use War Room that's where I end up) but for now I'll stick with the starter stuff, so here's the list as it stands:
Madrak1 - Runebearer - Bomber - Pyre Troll
Fell Caller Hero (free) Champion Hero (free) Valka (free)
Fire Eaters Fire Eaters Battle Bears Battle Bears Max Champions + Skaldi + Sorcerer Max Krielstone + Northkin Elder
I'm looking to get some practice games in next week and any advice in advance from more experienced players would be appreciated. Thanks!

That looI'd like a great start. Storm is our first and only combined arms theme, it's quite seductive. I don't think there's a major flaw to address, but will point out that the fire eaters can light themselves up and then you can swap the pyre for an axer to make your bomber really scary. The pyre is a much safer way to do it, though. Play both and see what you like!

Looks like a decent list indeed. One can always tweak this or that, but this list should have a game in to many thing. You could still get your ass kicked, but that is to be expected when piloting a new faction

Ok so moving forward I'm hoping to build a pairing for local steamrollers. I'm not going to rush out and go buy everything at once (for starters my budget simply won't allow it) but I would like to get some information regarding what I could/should be looking at. A few Warlocks that caught my eye:
Grim Angus Madrak 2 Grissel 1 Borka 2 Gunnbjorn
As mentioned before I'm finding it hard to leave SotN (with Borka 2 and Grissel 1 the main offenders). It seems that Madrak 2 would prefer BoH, though for Grim Angus or Gunnbjorn I have no idea where to start. Would any of these alongside Madrak 1 be considered viable pairs? I guess my aim isn't to tech for everything in my local meta yet, but just to get an idea for what kinds of things I could handle or struggle with.
My actual practice games should start on the weekend so I'll have more personal input and preferences after that, but some additional advice would be great.

Your Madrak 1 list is semi susceptible to dedicated shooting. So, how about we build an anti-shooting list for you? You could pretty much start with the same list piloted by Gunnbjorn and see how that works i guess. No additional models need to be brought then... When i look closer at your list though, I am not fully in love with the battle group. It is 2 points short. Also, i would not spend as many points on things that could be free in theme. right now, you have both the champ hero and Valka who both are nifty, but who are not essential for the list. With a bit of tweaking, you could get a Mauler in there, and significantly increase the ARM cracking potential of the list. The Pyre troll is nifty to light up fire eaters. However, it is not mandatory with them. It has an OK gun, but if you try to use that you will run hot on fury and your stuff will start to frenzy. I think it would be worth it to try and get some extra fury management in there. The bomber will want to force 4 times each turn, so the other beasts will either frenzy (if not fury management is available) or have to make due with no fury spent. Here is an example pairing for you that requires only a few additional models. Take it for what it is worth. I built it sort of on the fly, and based on what you had already built. It will not be the best pairing ever, but for some one new to the faction it is reasonable to assume that your inexperience with the lists will hold you back more than the lists themselves (no offense, but you know how things go. this is a hard game) | Trollbloods Army - 75 / 75 points [Theme] Storm of the North

Basic idea is that if they want to shoot you, play Gunnbjorn. If they want to punch you, play madrak. Both lists are sort of balanced and could fight in to many different opponents with a reasonable chance of success.

Especially when starting out they can probably perform quite good. I will point out though, because I just went through the same process, I don't like pairings with the same theme. I really think that once your able to and get the hang of it you should switch the Madrak1 list to Band of Heroes. It's just problematic for me that if you have the same units in both lists and anybody has a counter in one of their lists you can basically say goodbye to one unit. I'm pretty sure trollock knows this and kind of talked about it. To switch that list, basically take some fennblades and maybe some Warders and your good to go. That's it for my input, but I'm pretty sure you can trust trollocks thinking
