Artillery are there for long range support and a free turn of shooting as merc ranged choices are so-so. No. Artillery are great and all, but the cannons are there simply to give Advance Move to a couple of Nomads for a bargain cost.

From my experience with magnus2 your pairing needs to cover things that can chew through armor or are resistant to being jammed out of scenario( parry, ghostly, incorp), a lot of shooting, or weaponmaster spam can all be issues f0r magnus2. Currently im pairing magnus2 with laelese macbain : War Room Army Mercenary - Mac Daddy Theme: Llaelese Resistance 2 / 2 Free Cards 75 / 75 Army Drake MacBain - WJ: +30 - Sylys Wyshnalyrr, The Seeker - PC: 0 - Galleon - PC: 39 (Battlegroup Points Used: 30) - Mangler - PC: 15 - Vanguard - PC: 10 Anastasia di Bray - PC: 3 Exemplar Errants - Leader & 9 Grunts: 16 - Exemplar Errant Officer & Standard - Officer & Standard: 0 Choir of Menoth - Leader & 3 Grunts: 4 Thorn Gun Mages - Leader & 2 Grunts: 9 Thorn Gun Mages - Leader & 2 Grunts: 9 THEME: Llaelese Resistance Exemplar like feat and fortune, choir on a galleon that can shoot for its turn, drag something in then you jackhammer at POW 24. Failsafe + no spells can keep the galleon alive. Anastasia is a good solo to put in the rubble and put countermeasure on then run her 14" turn one for a deep reaching no shooting bubble. The gun mages can black penny to free up the exemplars if needed, prowl plus pathfinder from theme works well and you have plenty of magical attacks. Vanguard can keep dispel shots and such of macbain and galleon. Mangler fpr a 2nd beater as a secondary beater who is focus efficient.

Adding lanyssa rysvale for free 14 inch nomad charges and 15 inch free booter might not be too bad either.

Currently im pairing magnus2 with laelese macbain : So Cryx as a potential issue, along with some others. Llaelese resistance was my thinking too. Get the Thorn Gun Mages and you've got a reasonable answer to most incorporeal (Wraith Engine aside) and still quite a few points to play with. It can't just be that. There are various ways to get the 12 points needed to achieve 4 free solos, so the 2 HAC are a choice over those (just off the top of my head: TAC + Blythe and Bull or Herne and Jonne; 2 Sea Dog Deck Guns and 6 points more on jacks or units; Thorn Gun Mages + Sea Dog Deck Gun) - so there's a reason that it was the artillery which was chosen.

It is just that - I just listened to the podcast where the list's creator described why he took those things. The advance move (and not being a substandard model like the other options you listed) was absolutely the reason for their inclusion. This list fights by placing a bunch of heavies in the center of the board on turn one.

Wow great resource. Thanks! Was wondering why magnus'node was left out. Makes sense to a certain degree with calamity costing 3 and the 10 point cost vs. Nomads 11. Also bullet dodger on freebooter doesnt sound bad at all.

Assuming you have some spare warjack arms lying around from multikits, converting battlebox or grind ironclads into nomads is probably the most economical way to spam nomads. Hoard o bits has the grind ironclad bodies on sale for about 5.50 which is how the front two were made:

Eiryss1 is more or less essential to the list's ranged assassination potential. If you can get a Buccaneer knockdown on the enemy caster, followed by an Eiryss1 Disruptor Bolt, then the caster is at the mercy of two POW14 brutal damage mortar shots without power-up or transfers. That is a serious threat to most casters in the game. Opponents should recognise this so either have to play cagey with their caster, or prioritise Eiryss1 as a target. Anastasia - one of the few 3 point (or fewer) options available. The only other possibility worth considering would be Meg, but bonus to first turn is always good and it is possible that Magnus2's feat can help get in range for Anastasia to actually pull off Espionage (still quite unlikely, but still). Eiryss1 and Meg can do a nice Stationary - Disruption tag team if they get a crack at a heavy jack.

Having played the list a couple of dozen times, the Artillery (beyond inclusion for advance moves) is a nice addition as they do pretty good chip damage to jacks on the top of 2 which allows Nomads to sometimes one-round an opposing heavy. I've also had good luck knocking high value targets down with a Bucc net or Freebooter throw followed by dropping two artillery shells on them. H+J an B+B don't offer that kind of ranged damage to hard targets.

I've posted a much less good version of that list when I was taking it in Kingmaker and I played it very similarly. I can't wait to try it with advance move on the heavies. It seems pretty unquestionably strong, so the comments talking about pairings are very helpful.

I played against Maggie and his irregulars on Wednesday (see report in signature).
The amount of free support solos you can pull out is really good, and when you're running 23 points up, it's a major ball ache.
