I know Company of Iron just came out, but I am intrigued by the teaser information for the Unbound update. I won't get No Quarter until later this week, but the idea of Warhammer model counts with Warmachine rules sounds great. I'm also hoping that having multiple 50 point forces will remove the all-or-nothing assassination threat of Warmahordes while having alternate activations will mean overwhelming alpha strikes won't be as demoralizing as 40K.
So enough of my hopes and speculation, has anyone read it? I assume it is too recent for anyone to have tried it.

I played a couple games of the Unbound rules that came out in No Quarter #36 back around 2011. I would assume that the rules wouldn't be too different, except that it would account for differences between Mk2 and Mk3, as well as incorporate some lessons learned from over the years.

The rules are less robust than the old unbound rules, but thats the context i come at it from. Basically the rules is this. Build a list of multiple 50 point lists. The 50 point lists can be theme forces. Pick scenario deploy. Then you alternate activating your 50 point lists. When a 50 point list activates that is a turn. You allocate focus and shake effects right at the beginning of your 50 point list activation. When all 50 point lists have activated that is a round. Beginning of next round you have the chance of seizing the initiative. You get +1 top seizing the iniative if you completely control an 8th of the board. Theme benefits only works on that 50 point list. If you have a theme benefit that removes ad you pick am enemy 50 point list. +1 to starting role is cumulative That's about it.

Can you play two of your 50-point Detachments as Cygnar or Khador, etc and the third as Mercs? Or Grim 1, Madrak 1, and Carver? And so on?

How the frack do you measure that? Wouldn't both players each "completely control" half the board on turn 1? Nothing against you Wolf, just seems like a dumb and kinda vague rule.
Edit: the multiple army bit raises plenty of questions though. If one army has an Aura based model. Does the aura get to apply to all models or just the models in the same detachment? What about control range feats? I hope the full rules actually cover that kind of stuff.

To answer your first question, from the rules: "The more ground a player controls, the greater his chances of seizing the initiative. When playing Unbound, the table is divided into eight 24˝ × 18˝ territories. Each player gains +1 on their roll to seize the initiative for each territory they control at the start of the round. A player controls a territory if they have one or more models completely within it and their opponent does not." As for your second set of questions: I couldn't find anything specific on stuff like auras or feats and who they affect, so for now I'd assume they work as normal (barring the timing changes introduced in Unbound, for feats and spells).

Wait, so the table goes 16' in one direction? That's kind of insane.

Its 4' x 6' instead of 4' x 4'. 8 territories. 2 up and 4 across.

I never got the chance to try it in MkII but I'm interested in trying this version. It seems a lot less convoluted at the list building stage and it's slightly smaller than the old one (2+ 50 point lists with themes vs 3+ MkII 50 point lists).

Honestly My only concern is How long the games will take. One of the bigger turn offs for 40k was taking 3+ hours to play a 2000 Point game

Ok thanks, for the clarification(s) I think this might be a nice way of setting up multiplayer games. Maybe have each table side roll to go first. Then the players can decide among themselves who activates and the enemy gets the same opportunity to decide their counter activation. I just can't imagine letting feats overlap. Things like Kaya 3 giving all models ghostly and +2 def for the round. Where as Kryssa only hands out the +3 str for her turn. Kinda wonky. [edit] Honestly My only concern is How long the games will take. One of the bigger turn offs for 40k was taking 3+ hours to play a 2000 Point game the 75pt games I play take 3+ hours. 150 would be a day long commitment. To the benefit of the mode I think the alternating activation will give much better counter play and thus faster casualties.

Casters always have different feat power levels so I assume I'm misunderstanding you. Kaya 3 would (theoretically) be able to give ALL 150pts of models the benefit of her feat through all 3 separate activations. While kryssa can only hand it out to 50pts during her activation. Therefore I don't think feats would be allowed to affect models outside their own detachment.

Oh, I see. I mean, they would have to all filter through Kaya's 12" bubble so I don't think it's that big a deal honestly. It's going to be a little more crowded than a normal game with upwards of double the points on only a 50% larger table, that's just sorta something you have to deal with. I doubt it will be a huge swing, though the Old Witch and Harbinger will probably get a ton of use out of their feats.
