So my party consist of a Priest/Arcanist, a Warcaster/Gunmage and a Mechanic/undecided. We haven't started playing yet (or even put characters down on paper). I'm thinking I want to play a Skilled Human Knight/x. I just can't seem to find what "x" is. I never was good at algebra. I've looked at Man at Arms, Military Officer and Duelist but I feel like that would skew me way too hard to being all physical. Having never played the RPG I was wondering....is that such a bad thing? What would some of you more experienced types do?

Or you can do something zany and crazy.

Being really good at one thing is really great when that thing is happening and then you're sort of a lump the rest of the time. That said, Knight/Whatever has got some potential for mild or moderate social skill. If you're in a sword fight with a bunch of mooks with swords, you'll probably have a great time mopping the floor with them. If your GM is a jerk and throws entrenched snipers at you every combat, you're probably not going to have a lot of fun. If you think you're likely to get bored or anxious if you feel like you're not contributing, it might not be a bad idea to build something more well-rounded. Personally,I'd rather build to do one thing well and feel like a superstar when I'm in my element and try to do passably well at one other thing if I have room for it. I know other people who'd rather build so they never feel like they're the worst at whatever is going on. The only way I think you can really lose is if you don't have a good feel for the type of game you're in and you build a combat monster in a game that ends up being about political intrigue or espionage or you build a sexy librarian for a game that's going to be exclusively dungeon crawls.

SO what is the tanky route? Knight/Man-at-Arms is one of the tankiest options. You'll probably want Mighty over Skilled for access to Feat: Revitalize. Beat Back, Feat: Back Swing, Feat: Counter Charge, Feat: Vendetta, and Righteous Anger are all solid for defensive types. Shield and reach is a potent combo if you can manage it, and Cleave, Defender, Shield Guard, Retaliatory Strike, Load Bearing, and Specialization are all excellent choices. If you do go Skilled, you'll probably want Virtuoso or Feat: Defensive Strike. Cagey, Feat: Swashbuckler, Preternatural Awareness, and Sidestep are all useful. The idea here is to leave your enemies with as few good options on who to attack as possible.

Your party seems a bit light on social skills. Knight/Investigator or Knight/Nobleman could be interesting? Depends on what sort of game your GM is looking to run as well.

I've gone mighty knight/man at arms with a halberd and shield for now. We play for the first time pretty soon so I'm thinking it will be a good time.

Not that anyone remembers this thread but we've had 3-4 sessions now and I've been crushing combats and keeping our priest AND our gun mage alive. Party ended up with another tanky type characters and a warjack so we are pretty set on crushing skulls. Our DM forgot to give us XP until recently and I have no idea whether I want to spend it into developing some social skills to a small degree or continuing to make myself into the combat monster I love playing.

If I'd seen this back during its inception, I would have recommended an Intellectual character, actually. +1/+1 to all attacks is really great, just ask Severius. My players never leave home base without the "Smarty Pants" Bonus.
That being said, good to see you've been enjoying the tank route. Being beefy is great, and between Defender and Shield Guard, you've probably got something to do during your opponent's turn no matter what is going on.
As for advancement, you do have the occupational skills to give you some social stats, so you could probably get away with just spending those and using abilities/archetype slots on combat; on the other hand there are some gems for non-combat tucked away in there, it's down to personal preference I suppose.
