Hello, I’ve been away from the hobby for a while (had our first child 6 months ago so time is limited). Just starting to find a little time to sit and paint etc and wanting to know what I’ve missed. I know we have the northkin models coming. Which are the ‘best’ for me to get first? Either in terms of auto include or just really cool models to paint and add to my collection. Many thanks for taking the time to read and bring me up to speed as much as possible

well if you're going to be running northkin you'll probably be including the northkin elder. Other than that the bears are really good and so is Kolgrima

We have three Northkin warlocks in the Borkas and Kolgrimma. You might want to look at those to see if any in particular suit you. I like Valka but some of us don't. The Battle Bears are fun and good especially because Ambush is great in the new Steamroller. The Raiders are just plain strong. If you really want to play the Northkin theme often you will need a Hooch Hauler but that doesn't release until January. On the bright side, that leaves more time to save up for a new battle engine.
But really, the Northkin Elder is the only new arrival that is a must-have, and he's pretty cheap for a nice new model kit. Just don't forget that he can be played in other themes too. In particular, Kolgrimma and Borka 2 sometimes use him in Power of Dhunia (aka "POD") builds.

I think that the northkin are NOT the only new things. Sure, they are the new MODELS we have, but with the CID changes and how theme forces work now it feels like the whole faction has changed. 1) We have two new theme forces in Northkin and Kriel Company. KC is probably a bit weak, but it allows you to play shooty troll stuff without cutting yourself in the foot too much. The new War Wagon is bonkers bananas. Getting one or two of those is not a bad call 2) We have gotten some really nice quality of life changes to the faction in general. Our PoD lists that we played 6 months ago have not changed very much, but they have gotten access to minions. Having a unit of Brigands/nyss/croaks in PoD will be quite common. Just make sure that after you still spend 75+ points on beasts and you will be dandy. Buying/painting a minion unit could be very reasonable. 3)Band of Heroes has gone from bad to incredible. Champions have become better and all the infantry in there now counts towards free solos. If you want to play with your infantry, now is a good time, and i have ordered a second unit of champions to go with the new Madrak 1! 4) Several Warlocks have gotten some much needed love. At this stage id say that EVERY SINGLE ONE of our warlocks are tournament viable. If you have an old sweet heart that you didnt play/paint before due to the rules being weak, check it out again. Borka 2 and Madrak 1 are the most changed, but others have gotten some love too, and changes to how the Kriel Stone works opens up a lot of casters as well. Oh, and the new Runebearer? Splendid! If you are looking for new models to buy, id go with the bears. Very cool guys that do really cool things on the table. If you just want to get back in to the game, i recommend reading up on the errata documents to see what has changed, cause the faction is wide open right now!

Thank you all for your advice. Much appreciated. My two sweetheart warlocks from before were doomy3 and hunters grim although I never actually got hunters on the table. How are these guys doing at the moment? I’ve also received a MK since I last played. Is he still decent? And with who?

Grim 2 is very strong, just hard to play, and for a Trollblood caster, that is saying a lot. The Mountain King went from zero to hero in the edition change. He is now one of the best gargantuans in Hordes and good with almost all of our warlocks. It is literally easier to list who doesn't want one. That is Kolgrimma, Doomy 2, Borka 2, and maybe Jarl, assuming he is not in Kriel Company and can take a Mauler instead.

MK is not my first choice for either of them, but it certainly is a possibility. With Kolgrimma and Jarl id agree that a MK seems sub optimal, but its not the worst idea ever or anything...

Yeah, a speed 7 mountain King might put a bee in your opponent's bonnet. Especially if you have another threat extender or two. Stack up an Axer, Lanyssa, and Jarl and you get a... 14" assault? That's movement, not threat. You could charge something 16"away. That seems pretty good to keep your opponent on the back foot, even if you never actually do it.

With the northkin elder, who’s been mentioned as a must have, why is he a must have? I’m like the idea of +2 str on northkin warrior models but do we have many of them?

If you play the SotN theme force, ALL warrior models except your caster become northkin. this include the new models, as well as champs, kriel warriors and long riders. It is a very powerful thing.

Northkin Elder: +2 damage to each NK infantry melee attack OR +2 damage to ranged/magical Cold Damage type attacks (we don't have a Cold Damage type melee attack <-- wouldn't want the EBDT to be immune to MELEE attacks of an elemental type!)
The NK-E perhaps returns TB infantry play to MK2-like damage production viability (sans a few units like Burrowers).
Bears are pretty amazing, both in sculpt and on field potential.

Yeah, that is what I meant. He is a must if you want to play the Northkin theme or Kolgrimma or the Borkas. +2 damage on every attack from the Champs or every spray from Granny and her Shamans and Runebearer will add up fast. +1 SPD on most or all of your army will make you fast.
