Played a game taking Durst into Thagrosh 1, attrition was going well in my favour and we were matched for points. Miss understanding the fury mechanics behind transfers i send Durst in to try and kill thags...... my game ended there.
This experience got me thinking of other times when victory was all but mine till i do's something stupid.
So i think to myself "I can't be the only person to have ever done this". So here we are, a thread to talk about the times that we shanked ourselves out of a win.
Come on people, don't be shy.

My advice - if you control the game, never assassinate! Never, ever. Stay safe, move your caster away, methodically attrition your way to victory. There's a hundered things that can go wrong in an assassination attempt, but when the attrition machine rolls in your favour it is not that easy for your opponent to turn it back.
I would only assassinate if - I have no other choice (losing, low on time etc) - I can attempt it without risking vital pieces, especially my caster
For me assassination is not a winning condition to go for, it's a losing condition for me to avoid.

I can second both of you. Playing Testament in Exemplar theme I often end up ahead on attrition and with a pile of soul tokens. 10+ focus? Why don't I just go for a spell assassination! Proceed to fail and throw away my advantage in on fell swoop. I've done this twice now and have since vowed to myself that I will not go for the assassination unless I have no options.

I completely spaced on scenario and actually repositioned my Flame Bringers out of a zone and subsequently lost on scenario at the end of my own turn despite being well ahead attrition wise and poised to most likely win on my next turn by killing Cassius since he had nothing left to handle my jacks or the Vessel of Judgment
actually most of my losses tend to be from ignoring scenario and focusing on caster kill
Recently, charging in with Feora 1 with Engine of Destruction up and 6 FOC (used Wrack and Hierophant to cast engine for free basically) and wound up getting Critical pitched away on the retaliatory strike by the Child. I had other ways I could have taken the child down, maybe not as realiably, but I just ignored the possibility of actually getting receiving a crit on the retaliatory strike.

Proceed to fail and throw away my advantage in on fell swoop. I've done this twice now and have since vowed to myself that I will not go for the assassination unless I have no options. I only go for the epic Spirit bomb assasination if: 1: I have no more units..... 2: My opponent has only killed off one entire unit and I have no revive targets and have nothing better to do with 16-18 focus (not counting wrack) Basically it is only ever worth it when you have enough focus to lob 4+ fully boosted Dust to Dusts at an enemy caster. that's around 24 damage to an 15/15 caster on no camp, and 16 to a caster camping 2. (6 damage per shot needing 9's to hit assuming you do not miss) Now typically if you meet condition 1 you are sitting anywhere from 20-30 focus and that will kill just about any caster in the game. Also, never underestimate the power of Requiem....I killed a gargantuan once with testament after a troll player wiped out everything but my 2 units of knights E. Sat on like 30 focus and just killed it with boosted pow 14's. Testament threats 12" with apparition and reach! thanks to dice spikes I was even able to camp 2 Now for one of my more embarrassing blunders.... Playing reznick 1 up on attrition decide to go for an epic scourge of heresy assassination even though I don't need to. Perdition goes off, scourge moves...reznick charges a troll champion...champ toughs. buy attack...toughs...buy attack...toughs...sitting on 1 focus....buy last attack, misses...Sadness... The troll player gave that champion a cool hat.

Ugh, I have a lot of these. For me it tends to always come down to positioning models so that they are either scoring or contesting.
A great example of this is from the most recent steamroller I attended;
Final (and fourth) round of the tournament, I've gone 2:1 so far and winning the last round will net me fifth place overall which I want to get to.
Scenario: outlast. This is fairly good for both my lists, my opponent is locked into a slow Sev1 list which is no match for either Thyra or Vindictus' raw speed. I opt to put down Thyra on a hunch that I can hold him up long enough with double flame bringers and ambushing daughters with Anastasia to score.
Everything goes according to plan. His force is slow, gets caught up with my ambushers. I could score three points this turn... Except I don't get a full unit in the right circle. I could have done if I had my head on straight, but I reposition one model in the flame bringer unit OUT of the zone. Crikey this sets me back badly, as I can't attrition very well, and my hopes were on scoring three in the first opportunity, another two or one as he contests, and then winning. As it is, my force loses momentum very quickly (Guardians has a glass jaw) and it begins to turn south very fast as he's able to score on his flag and start killing flame bringers.
In doing so however, Sevvy is the one to score on his flag. He's jammed up my remaining two flamebringers with Idrians, but Sevvy is exposed. In a desperate gamble, I kill off two with Thyra, releasing one of the horses, casting carnage and Silence of Death onto the flame bringer unit. Blood of Martyrs slays another Idrian, and all of a sudden my flame bringers can walk and catch Sevvy1. He's on five focus, but four attacks later I get a hand shake and a final win. It was hail Mary, pure luck, but it worked.
It's an example where one model out of a zone very nearly cost me the game and I lost all the momentum I had built up - suddenly every plan out the window. I got very lucky, but not letting that mistake meant I could go home happy.
