Hello ! Over the years I bought a bit of mercs here and there and it recently came to me that I could probably build a list for fun with what I have. In your expert opinion. What jacks, caster and unit could I add to what I already have and have a fun/semi compatible list? Keep in mind, I don't want to spend a lot on this for the moment. I play Protectorat and Khador. Thank you all in advance ! What I have: Units:Alexia Ciannor & the Risen Idrian Skirmishers + UA Kayazy Eliminator Lady Aiyana & Master Holt Thorn Gun Mages Solos:Anastasia di Bray Eirys; Mage Hunter of Ios Gastone Crosse Kell Bailoch Orin Midwinter Ragman Rhupert Carvolo Rutger Shaw Taryn di la Rovissi Alten Ashley Warjacks:Talon Vanguard Atachments:Madelyn Corbeau Reinholdt Sylys Wyshnalyrr

So Ashlyn would be a good caster for a new merc player?

So Ashlyn would be a good caster for a new merc player? well that is what I thought when I was a new player and I lost my first two games and then won 16 straight with her but it turns out I was just playing really crappy players and i was kind of good so if you have crappy opponents the answer is yes

As a dabbler in mercs from Khador, take with some caution...
The first thing to mention is that a Protectorate player, the Llaelese Resistance theme currently in CID will let you use 2 Protectorate units. That might help with budget issues.
That theme force has a restricted choice of casters. Ashlynn is in the theme (unsurprisingly) but also in CID - opinion seems to be she is much improved (but that's from a low starting point). Macbain is in the theme (and two others) and is a nicely flexible caster. He's often seen with Galleon in tow (he does lots for it), but he runs the standard merc heavies pretty well too.
Those two are probably the best starting points for someone coming from Protectorate.
I'd think about Ashlynn in Llaelese Resistance, but consider Macbain in the Irregulars theme (in CID) - you can include lots of your solos in that force and all of the units you have. In Irregulars consider giving Rutger Shaw the Talon for an ARM 18 shield guard which gets flank from friendly faction warriors.
In terms of other purchases, Major Gibbs will be very useful in Llaelese Resistance, but is also handy with other Llaelese models (from your list, includes Ragman, Taryn and the Thorn Gunmages) in other builds.
For jacks, I'd say 2 or 3 of the standard merc plastic kit, and magnetise. It's likely you're going to choose Nomads most of the time, but options never hurt.
That's probably enough for you and your wallet to be going on with!

Rule one of merc forums... Shoe is a troll. As for O.A.C. not really worth it. They die easier then u might think, and really struggle from jack of all trades, but master of none. And Ashlyn may be a good caster once the new CID and theme lists drop, but until then she's considered one of the weakest in faction.
Advice, Damiano if you're interested in going humans as he's probably one of the easiest casters I've ever used, and he is quite competitive if you're interested. Just note you'll probably want steel head stuff to go with him (though he does a lot for non-steel head too).
If dwarves are more your thing, Ossrum is your guy! Not only is he the battle box caster, he's awesome with pretty much all things dwarven, and branches into irregulars and other themes pretty well. Again, he's also considered a pretty competitive caster.

Borderprince really hit the nail on the head. Those are amazing choices given what you have now and what you are coming from, in terms of models and experience.
Crow also did a good rundown of places to go from there.
My addition would be to add that you really want to build up your jack stable. Units and solos are becoming increasingly important, but having a good supply of jacks opens up more casters to you and more options. The Rhulic casters (because Durgen doesn't count in my mind) need a significant investment (lots of jacks, the siege engine, forge guard, HAC) and will use very little of what you have, but are great. Damiano doesn't need a huge battlegroup and neither does Ashlynn or Macbain, but they tend to benefit from different things. I'd focus on getting a good stable of heavies (magnetize if you want or just kitbash the bodies depending on your preference) and a few lights (vanguards if you are going to play in Llaelese, talons and maybe a buccaneer otherwise).
