As i have blathered on about here, i can no longer play 3 games a week due to personal reasons. I now play a game a week or something like that, and lately i have tried lots and lots of different things. The drawback then is that i only scratch the surface on the things i play. Granted that a big part of this is that there are new things like the CID changes and Northkin right around the corner. The faction will change a LOT during what is left of 2017.
To sort of stem my list building ADD, i figured i would challenge myself and build a list that i will play 5 times before i play anything else. This is to get a bit more routine with the caster in question before i move on to anything else. Earlier this year i had a "10 games with Jarl" sort of challenge, and it was super rewarding and even led to a small tournament win. I got a deep appreciations for the nuances of Jarl and i have played him more even after the 10 games were over.
The idea here is to make a shorter challenge, and also to encourage you guys to challenge yourselves similarly. Pick a list, play it 5 times and i will try to write some battle reports too. Maybe you will do that as well? I find it very rewarding to write about a game when i analyze it. It allows me to learn MUCH more from the game.
Now it is time for me to get to grips with my least played Troll caster: Ragnor. I have only played him a couple of times, and never twice in a row. On paper, he looks like he has simple but powerful abilities, and i get the gist of how to play him, but i have not spent enough time with him to appreciate the details in how to play him well.
I decided to go with a good ol' PoD list that would not be hugely changed by the CiD changes, should they become official before I am done with my five games. If that happens i will tweak the list to make the points work out, but i will not change much.
[Theme] The Power of Dhunia
(Ragnor 1) Ragnor Skysplitter, The Runemaster [+30]
- Earthborn Dire Troll [15]
- Earthborn Dire Troll [15]
- Mountain King [36]
- Troll Axer [10]
- Winter Troll [8]
- Trollkin Runebearer [0(4)]
Janissa Stonetide [0(4)]
Troll Whelps [0(4)]
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes (max) [9]
- Stone Scribe Elder [3]
Trollkin Runeshapers [9]
The Winter Troll is out of place here for sure, but once the point cost of EBDTs goes down, it could be upgraded possibly. I am under no illusions that this is the best list ever with Ragnor, but it has many of the base line things i am looking for with him. The EBDTs hit hard with Pulverizer and Rage, and are still pretty fast with forests and stuff around. They are annoying to kill even without the feat, and with the feat they can in good conscience roam outside the stone aura and take advantage of an obstacle and still be pretty much unkillable for a round.
The MK is a good generalist and fist in to almost any PoD list with ease. He can kill what ever and he is unkillable on the feat turn.
The Axer is nifty since you can buff damage with Pulverizer, so the EBDTs could do some work even without Rage, and they become really fast with Rush. Same goes for the MK.
The Runeshapers are bad models for sure, but they could score, or contest and with the feat they are resilient to shooting for a turn even if they run. I do not love them, but i sort of feel like i have to play them more for scenario reasons. At least i like the models...
So, my plan here is for me to play this list 5 times and write battle reports. This should give me a more intimate knowledge on how our battle box caster operates on the table. I will play this list in to what ever is across the table, so expect some bad match ups. That is fine by me though as it is good practice.
I hope YOU join me in this little project too!
