My comment was more tongue in cheek than anything but...
Erebus' stationary is a lot more useful then you're suggesting. Sure, some things can shake but they're using resources to do it. For me, he's been invaluable for a good number of assassination runs. A stationary caster goes a long way to a victory. Moreover, his poltergiest ability, while not always reliable has also won me games. It can be a source of frustration for opponents at times. On top of that is the free soul gathering that essentially gives me two instances of soul harvester. I'll take it.
Deathjack, for me, is too many points and has too big a target painted on him. That's not to say he's bad in any regard. I just have a lot more testing before I start building him into my Scaverous lists. I'd like Bathtub more if he had open hands and if the physical model was better.

Deathjack is a lot of points its true. But he has a support role (and a very useful one as scaverous is always focus strapped) before he's needed as a beater and in that support role he's often too far back to be reliably targeted. He's useful the whole game long as opposed to other jacks who are there for just threat and armour cracking. Would take him every time with scaverous.
As for assassination a seether has mat 8 +2 for back strike and +2 for icy grip. Mat 12 is enough for almost anything. Even def 18 legion casters (using guard dog) will drop to that if you have a soul or two. The only instance where I can fathom erebus being useful is if the opponent is running a caster who is immune to spell effects. In which case I would probably not be dropping scaverous.

I really like that Scaverous list. I have been thinking about ILO + seether with Scavvy for a long time. This really inpires me to finally put together a Scaverous list.

I actually love him and don't understand why many people don't. He is a lot of points, it's true, but he also does a lot of work, especially with a caster that can support him and/or has some decent nukes. Deathward is really valuable to him as it brings his armour up to respectable levels and with the choosing of column it's much easier to keep him operational and then just Snack it all back. I wouldn't bring him in every list, but like you say, Scaverous would be a decent candidate.

I do a fair amout of assassinating with Scaverous himself and stationary goes a long way towards that. At either rate there's no one size fits all that accounts for all play styles and strategies. I can't speak for anyone else but personally it's just a difference in list design philosophy. In many cases I'd rather spread out my output rather than castle it up into one model with a massive target on it. It's as much about asking myself "How do I recover once model X is destroyed?" as it is to ask "What do I want model X to do in my list?". Deathjack, even with "deathward" is really only marginally harder to kill than a typical Khador heavy. At either rate stress-testing a list is a thorough process and I'm not at the Deathjack point yet to even worry about it.
