Here's the thing about troll infantry/cav. It tends to be not very good, but that's mostly because its overcosted. Longriders might not be worth 20 points, but they're probably worth 18. In theme you're getting them at 15-16 points. Same for champs and warders. So the theme takes our overcosted infatry and makes them reasonably priced. PoD does the same for our slightly more reasonably costed beasts, which is why its fun to bring one of each theme in a list pair.
I've mostly focused on double long rider+ champ lists, because I have the models and want to use them. I've played them with madrak2 and both grissels. Madrak2 was probably the best with them, even post nerf, but grissel1 was a lot of fun and required more finesse than the average troll list, which was welcome. I didn't get in a lot of practice with grissel2 but liked my initial games with her.

So, i played my Madrak 3 list once yesterday in to Caine 2. It was a very good match up even if i had to go second. If i get to go first i think it is SUPER good. Highlight of the game was top of 2 when my opponent shot the fennblades furthest ahead with a firefly. They all toughed, and one moved up to engage his storm lances. He had to spend most of Caines resources to dislodge them, Then the storm lances killed like 3 more dudes and that was it. The lack of fury management is an issue though, and the chronicler might have to become whelps. This will reduce the survivability of the fennblades, but i want to be able to do work with my beasts. Its possible that whelps will not survive too well in this environment, but there are plenty of bases to block LoS with and plenty of shield guards. All in all, i think the list is pretty valid. Not very exciting to play perhaps. It is just getting up in the opponents face and grinding it out, but if you dont like that, i guess you shouldnt play trolls

I really like the idea of pBorka in BoH. Reminds me a lot of Family Reunion(which I miss terribly, still can't use my 3rd unit of champions). Warders are a great unit to use as both a shield for delivering the champions or to help keep your bg from being picked apart on approach. Long Riders biggest problem to me is their speed so the feat helps with that. pBorka doesn't care about the runebearer being left out so that's another plus and he is pretty awesome when you give him a 2 inch deployment advantage.

Pyre troll? Just because? I have a theory that opponents will forget about righteous vengeance and leave themselves in charge range. So I wanted the +2 damage.
I'd very much like being able to run Fire eaters with him. It's my first thought for the Northkin theme, before I've seen what the bonuses are.
I also considered trying a Pyre in the Dual Aura list, for not only those reasons but also because games tend to be longer grinds and I thought that a little continuous fire might add up. That and the immunity on Madrak might be handy. I could possibly even try Bomber, Pyre, and Storm, via that logic. (It's bizarre but I swear if I play a Mauler with Madrak 3 I lose and if I don't I win.)

This is my BOH theme I like to run. I was always a fan of the Miserable Meat Mountain in Mk2 and was waiting for a reemergence in Mk3, BOH allowed it to happen. It's a lot of boxes to chew through and with Hoof It Warders can get up the field to cause some real order of operations and other type of havoc. Long riders are in there because I needed something in the list to flank with. Before they were in the list the enemy could focus all attention on crushing the brick now they have to commit some resources away from my main force. Champions on feat turn with Skaldi are great fun. 3X overtaking weapon master hits are good time. As far as beasts go I usually use the bomber to lob barrels over the army and destroy objectives or soften up some warnouns. Mauler is a buff bot on the champions that are about to charge into stuff. The whelps probably aren't needed. I've been burned a few times by my heavies being drug in from the likes of the prime axiom that they are an insurance policy. Rage from the Mauler can only go on beasts. Boundless Charge, however, can go on any one model. I do love Champs, Warders, and Long Riders with Grissel 1, though. She can give the Riders Hoof It turn 1 and they can basically run 21 inches up the board if need be. Or later they can yo-yo back to the stone. Warders need to charge to do damage but need to end the turn B2B. Hoof It lets them do both. It can also help the Champs have an easier time using Overtake and that third attack on the feat turn. And the Champs can really wreck most charge targets with Calamity in the equation. Grissel 1 is a must-have if you like the Band of Heroes theme, though losing the Runebearer does hurt.

Yeah, +2 Deployment for Trolls is pretty awesome and one of my favorite things about the theme. That and I just like actually playing Champs and Fell Callers again.

The feat Makes gunfire against the fennblades only half as effective, and the movement part of it can allow them to get engaged and otherwise be annoying to remove. The 6 Warders means that the beasts will not care about funfire. But yes, the plan is to get stuck in there as fast as possible and punish lists that rely too much on shooting. And if they drop their melee infantry list instead, Fennblades and Rebuke will both be very good to help with that. Feels reasonable so far
