I started in Ret with a JML, I didn't do all that great but I learned a lot. To build up to the list I posted above I recommend:
Week 2 (08/10): Take a second Griffon this will help keep your other models safe Week 3 (24/25): Get a second Manticore and a Mechanik Week 4 (47/50): Hydra, Sylys, and 2 more mechaniks Week 5 (65/65): Second Hydra, take the theme which gives you a free Artificer and makes Sylys and a Mechanik free. this gives you enough points for a Gorgon Week 6 (74/75): Second Gorgon and a second free Artificer
Early on use your speed with Rhythm of War to keep your Chimera, Manticore, and Especially Helynna out melee. Soften up the enemy with shooting and spells while your Griffon(s) tries to flank, possibly going for a assasination.
Week 4 is tough with mostly support models added and playing 3 points down but on Week 5 you should be shooting things off the board.
Oh, something I still have trouble with is remembering Helynna has stuff to do after casting spells like repairing a jack or open up a charge lane with force grip.

Thanks for the info! I like your JML progression, I may have to nick it and give it a spin.

Thanks for the info! I like your JML progression, I may have to nick it and give it a spin. Feel free. I wish I had used it when I did the JML but they didn't have the theme list back then. I highly recommend getting An extra battlebox or 2 if you need to get more jacks for the list. Just leave the arc node fins off the chimera and its a Gorgon and the Manticore can be converted into a Hydra (or better yet magnetized).

Helynna and Kaelyssa is a pretty good pairing. Kaelyssa is a pretty good generalist and Helynna can handle the dedicated gunlines. If you are looking for ideas with both casters let us know! Any ideas would be great! I'm kicking off a JML in 3 weeks and I am playing Helynna in it. I'd like to get any tips or tricks for interesting plays. I can look up lists and copy them, but I'd like to hear about the little known tricks that make Ret sing. In the JML format, which I dislike a little for it's rigidity, Helynna has to take a 2nd Griffon on week 2. It then becomes really hard to build an optimal list for her. You are left with 17 points on week 3, which is enough for a minimum unit of Sentinels + CA and an Arcanist Mechanik. On week 4, you can add Discordia and make your Sentinel Unit a max one. On week 5, I would add another Manticore. This leaves you 11 points for the final week, which would be Sylys, 2 Arcanists and a Lyss Healer. Here is the full 75 points list: Helynna (+30) Sylys Wyshnalyrr (4) Chimera (8) Discordia (18) Griffon (8) Griffon (8) Manticore (14) Manticore (14) Max Sentinels + CA (22) Arcanist Mechanik (2) Arcanist Mechanik (2) Arcanist Mechanik (2) Lys Healer (3) This is pretty close to my tournament Helynna list. The 3 lights are replaced with a Phoenix, Lanyssa and 2 Soulless Escort. The list can make very good use of every part of Helynna's kit. Rythm of War is an incredible spell, it allows Manticore to shoot then move back out of range, Griffons can charge something then make themselves harder to remove from the table and the Chimera can get at max Arc Node range before moving away to safety. Decceleration makes everything very hard to shoot, especially when you combine Helynna's feat and Discordia's Kinetic Field ability. The Lyss Healer stays close to Helynna and her myrmidon wall, preventing knockdown and stationary. Use Hand of Destruction to skew dices in your favor. Obliteration can be used through the Arc Node with a Sylys Arcane Secret to clear infantry clusters. The list is very durable, both in melee under feat or against shooting. It can crack armor, it has some board control with the Manticore's covering fire. Another important part of the progression I suggested is that all the models included will see regular table time.
