Here's the deal, while I've been playing Warmachine off and on since near the beginning of Miki, neither myself or the paltry "meta" of my area (two other people) have played or played against Ret. One of the main draws for me, actually. So, while I should be taking baby steps, I've jumping in with a 25 point list. The battle box and a Mechanik are the only ones I own, the rest will be subbed.
Helynna Aspis Chimera Griffon Manticore Arcanist Mechanik X3 Dawnguard Sentinels min Soulless Voidtracer I have a feeling it'll be a shoot Haley1 list. He likes gun mages and this will be his first mkiii game.
Any thoughts on the list?

I think it could be a solid list especially at the point level one thing that I would maybe suggest is unless you really feel that the shield guard is a must maybe dropping the soulless to upgrade the Aspis to a second Griffon. Griffon are great combat lights and they can do a lot of work. Ultimately Ret is at a place where most everything you run can work well. Obviously we have some list that are super competitive but play what you want to especially for your first couple games. Last but not least welcome to the faction!

Since you are using proxy for most models, go ahead with your plan and test these models out. Your list itself is ok and will probably perform quite well unless you are facing a cookie cutter list.

I'm pretty sure what the list is that I'll be up against.
Haley1 - Defender - Lancer Gun Mages -Officer Stormblades
I'm not trying to tailor a list specifically to counter this, just trying to not face first into a hail of magical bullets.

Looks like a good list but if you are pretty sure you're going against Haley1 and stormblades I'd be a little worried. From personal experience Sentinels, especially a min unit, do not do well against e-leps.
I actually like Helynna with almost all jacks, so if you really want to mix your list up: Drop the Sents and Voidtracer, a mechanik and the Aspis and use the Theme. Add a Hydra, Griffon, and get Sylys and one of the mechanics for free. This way you would have all the shield guards you could want and start with Rhythm of War already cast.
Helynna -30 Hydra 15 Manticore 14 Griffon 8 Griffon 8 Chimera 8 Sylys 0 Mechanik 0 Mechanik 2 Total 25

You should do great, just play it out and tell us how it goes.

I'm fairly sure that's what he's bringing as he asked me to check the point cost in WR2. I was thinking about the electro-leaps what about dropping the Sentinels for a unit of Stormfall Archers? Then I'd have the points to upgrade the Aspis to a Griffon and keep the Voidtracer, which I'd really like to field.

Your list is fine. Ideally Id' drop the Aspis, Griffon and Voidtracer to take another Manticore. Sentinels are amazing with Helynna and otherwise. If you are going to be playing Ret, don't wait, just buy them.
Your list will have lots of game against Cygnar.

From personal experience Sentinels, especially a min unit, do not do well against e-leps. You mean Haley's Chain Lightning? Not Haley's spell exactly but other Cygnar electricity attacks that "don't come from an attack". With out a firefly its not as dangerous but even so I've had a full unit of Sents almost completely destroyed by pow 10s that got around decel.

Getting the CA and bumping the Sentinels to max will take care of e-leaps. Armor 20 against leaps is fine on mini-feat turn. 17 is ok, on average you should not die, but you will lose a couple.

Thanks everybody, you've given me some things to think about. I might make up two and see what I how can do with a theme list. Thanks again!

Well, I lost to points at the end of turn six. This is the final list I went with Helynna Chimera Griffon Griffon Manticore Arcanist Mechanik Arcanist Mechanik Arcanist Mechanik Souless Voidtracer Stormfall Archers
I'd have to say that the Chimera took the most beating and only had it's cortex functional at the end. It got tarpitted by the Stormblades, which had one left at the end.I got pushed around a lot by the Gun Mages. He kept Haley back damn near the entire game. I'm not sure if I'm happy with the archers, mostly bad rolls on my part were to blame for them not doing much. The only piece I don't want to reuse was the voidtracer. I never can get melee solos to work right for me. Either they spend the whole game going around or get wasted as soon as they're out in the open. The was dismal rolling from both of us most of the night, like really dismal. I took a chance a tried to drop a Obliteration on the Gun Mages but rolled a two and it deviated 6" away. Stuff was figured out, things were learned and hopefully I'll learn from my mistakes and pull out a win for the next game.
Thanks for all the input!

The Voidtracer isn't really a "melee solo" as much a deterrent to hitting your stuff with spells. Helynna's only RAT fixer is Hand of Destruciton, so be sure to coordinate the placement of HoD on a unit the Stormfalls can touch (if you decide to keep them). Adding Sylys is a must for Helynna, having the ability to sling an Arcane Secrets boosted Oblit each turn is very good, plus the saved focus is nice. With the Chimera, remember that Place effects (like Apparition) do not incur a free strike. May help you from getting tarpit next time

HoD doesn't work with the Archers, since it's battle group only. A boosted Force strike using Sylys for the extra dice is a decent but not guaranteed way of knocking a target down for the Archers to finish off. If you are using focus elsewhere though remember most of our jacks can throw models around to knock stuff down.
