Anyone have any tips for thinning True metallics? I am working with Scale 75 metals for my Ironclad at the moment. They're gorgeous paints but they're too thick to paint straight and thinning them just seems to destroy them. I've tried water, Testors Acrylic Thinner, and Vallejo Thinner Medium so far. Nothing has gone well.
Would really like to be able to get a nice even coat going. Tips appreciated!
Thanks.

Have you tried Citadel Lahmian Medium? It's basically paint without the pigment. I'm not sure how Scale 75 does their metallics but it might do what the other solutions have not.

I also have Vallejo Matt Medium and Vallejo Metal Medium. I could try them - figure they're similar to Lahmian - but I thought "Medium" always thinned the paint density (opacity) not the actual consistency?

Basically, yes. It's hard to thin metals in terms of reducing viscosity, but my next suggestion would be flow improver. A little goes a long way.

I'll try to find some. I'm still wondering what the difference between "thinner" and "flow improver" are. Any hints?

Well, I'm assuming that what you are looking for is a smoother, more even application, rather than an actual dilution of pigment. Metallics don't do well in really thin coats, in my experience, they just need to go on smoothly, in which case one coat will do fine.
The flow improver pretty much does what the name implies - it allows the paint to go on smoother and more evenly. I find that thinning a metallic makes it look worse, so as long as I'm not laying it on heavily enough to obscure detail, it's better to get it all in one go.

You could use these metal from vallejo model and never look back ^^ check vince vinturella youtube channel on how get the best of them. they work very well and are air brush compatible If scale 75 is your only option use a drop or two of isopropanol 90%+

I'm using the Scale 75's because I had heard good things about them compared to GW's latest stuff. And to be honest, they've done pretty well. They're just very difficult to thin properly. I haven't tried isopropanol though.

Metal color replaced "old metal series" (alcohol based) they are my favorite now (and you can mix them to get mid tone even glaze with them)
For scale75 be sure to shake the pot very very very strong maybe it will help.
other option are : golden glaze medium , flow improver by vallejo, air brush thinner by vallejo

So are the new Metal Colors still alcohol based? I held off on them because of the special way you have to apply them and they are hell on brushes.

the new one are water based and very friendly to air brush. A simple air brush spray + nuln oil wash give you a finish very hard to get with a other paint+brush The other day i was late to finish painting my dyunamo for SR event and i just sprayed gun metal with aluminimum overbrush (both from metal color) then i sprayed blue did a few gold touch + fleshwash and voila. another exemple : the pole was aibrush with gunmetal + nuln oil wash + messy overbrush took less than 10 minutes ^^

I don't have an airbrush (and nowhere to really use one) but I'll have to try them out and see how they brush on.
