So I wanted to bring up our solos and how they fare in my opinion.
I feel like our solos are a bit lacklustre and uninteresting and with just a little love, could help our faction out a lot. I feel they need looking at more than our lights, which apart from a few outliers, aren't as bad as people make out.
So my first thought is, no solos under 4 points. This alone is making list building a bit of a headache and is stifling variety. A simple fix would be to make whelps 1 point for 1.
So with that out of the way, let's take a look at our solos and see how they fare.
Braylen: Oh my I'm in love with this model. Aesthetically only i'm afraid. With infantry out of the meta, she struggles to feel worth 5 points even in a calandra list with HWM. I'm not sure what would fix her. Mat 6 is ok with lucky shot. Maybe give her magic bullet? Make her 4 points? Give her ammo types to do some damage to jacks?
Fell Caller Hero: In a total reverse, this is the ugliest troll model, but is probably our best solo. Unfortunately with the rise of POD, he's being taken less and less. He has versatility and is probably appropriately costed. Again, meta means he'll be seen less as well, but the main culprit is a neccessary, rather than optional theme.
Kithkar: Maybe someone else can input here. I've rarely run fennblades, mainly playing Ragnor for MK3 and now Calandra, but he seems to be a lesser fell caller that only benefits one unit. Mat 8 fenns should usually be enough with a fell caller? I dunno...
Horgle: Potentially good, let down by his beasts. Slags are hard hitters that I personally don't use but seem good despite worst animus. Pyre is a sad case, even more so now we have POD (because he's a FE attachment)
Horthol: Never used but seems ok. Long riders are good and line breaker seems a decent elite cadre ability. Expensive for a faction that has a lot of support bloat so may not be able to afford him.
Janissa: What a fall from grace. However, is probably one of our better solos. The hill is great for the abundant bombers everywhere and to make popular casters better (Ragnor def 20, Calandra loves more def). Tectonic shift has amazing potential. My gripe with her is armour piercing is fantastic, but she is mat 6 with one attack. I often miss that attack. Probably appropriately costed.
Shaman: Is seeing play because there are lacklustre options for POD. People are often playing 2 for the clouds. This is fine if they're free but if not, 8 points is expensive for those clouds. Chiller could be useful for a faction that often sits at mat 6, but then will probably die. Has potential but I've not used him enough to judge.
Troll Whelps: My favourite solo. They're useful in every game I have. So versatile. Block charges, soak attacks, manage fury, lower accuracy, heal....all for 0.8 points. I'd still be happy if they were 1 point each and we could take them separately. I personally think they're our best solo, better than the fall caller, especially with POD abounding.
Champion Hero: I like the hero. One of our few mat 8 models and ret strike for champs is a nice edition, though with their drop to 5 boxes is harder to make use of. It's a shame he doesn't also give them pathfinder but putting Skaldi in as well means a lot of point investment for a unit that is harder to keep alive than before. Probably worth 5 points.
Skinner: Ooooh the skinner. I bought him quite early in my foray into the kriels because I love the model. I use him occasionally for fun because I like his ruleset. I am crap at remembering ambush though so I often play games with him, without even deploying him...ugh. Could be 3 points? Could an extra attack be too powerful? Maybe spd 7?
To address the 4 point cost across the board (And our favourite minion also being moved to 4 points -.-), maybe the shaman could be 3, and whelps 1. Kithkar and skinner maybe also moved to three? A 2 point cost somewhere would be good too but I don't know where that would come from.
So thoughts? Improvements needed to each model? Points adjustments?
Let me know.
