I was getting ready to set this up on the old forums, but then they kinda exploded. This is just a thread where I post up some random dojo and some accompanying battle reports that either prove it is the greatest thing ever, or there is a reason why people don't take these lists. As I was saving up for the old forums, some of the games are a little bit dated, but I think that they still have value. Once I figure out the most organized way to host photos, I'll get those embedded as well.
Feel free to chime in with thoughts, concepts, and criticisms!

When the Thornfall Alliance theme first dropped, I took a look at Ambushing Commandos and though...ehhhhhhhhhhh. Then I took a second look and thought…..Midas? So I jammed this together: Midas -Targ -Battle Boar -Splatter Boar -Gun Boar -Gun Boar -Gun Boar -Gun Boar (Gorax proxy) Rorsh -Brine Bone Grinders (min) Brigands (max) -Warlord (free) Commandos (max) It doesn’t necessarily maximize the theme, but I think it does a solid job of blending the strengths of Midas with the strengths of the theme. To me, at heart, Midas is an attrition grind caster with the option for a solid assassination feat. I feel that the Commandos feed into this, as I want to ambush them in such a way to encourage my opponents to break their casters out of whatever bunker they have built for them. On the assassination, the Gun Boars max out at Rat 11, Pow 15; and even if they miss, they can still drop some dangerous Pow 12’s, which isn’t terrible. Then Death March and Reform on the Brigands makes for an amusing yo-yo. I adore Brine with him, because fully buffed, Brine can deliver 5 Pow 19s (one boosted), 2 Pow 18s, and an Ancillary Pow 19 from 14” away. That is a lot of damage, a lot of distance, and while I wouldn’t rely on him one rounding a colossal, it is in the discussion. Also Midas can drop all those annoying arm upkeeps like Arcane Shield. To start, I threw Midas into the Gauntlet versus Ossrum Bunny Ranch and pre-nerf Una. My meta doesn’t take prisoners. Game #1 vs. Ossrum, Earthbreaker, x5 Bunnies, x2 Artillery, Eiryss, Kell, Alten. I won the roll and got to go first, just ran up slightly out of range of most of his shooting (can’t escape the snipers). In return, the snipers tried to take out the Gun Boar’s spirit, but came up about 1 damage or so short, everything else ran up. His list presents me with a huge amount of difficulty, as I am trying to keep Midas from being assassinated while also delivering Brine to the Earthbreaker, and I can only generate 2 clouds from the Splatter Boar and Targ. Ambushers come in and eliminate the Sniper corps. Gun Boars start trying to work on thinning the Gun Bunnies, denting one of them. Brigands advance and Dig In. Midas must advance because of Kill Box, he toes the corner of a wall. Targ and the Splatter Boar attempt to build him a mini cloud bunker. Ossrum comes forward, casts Bulldoze and feats. One of the Bunnies runs through the Brigands, bumping them out of the way, gets behind Midas and bumps him into the clouds. The Earthbreaker knocks him down and shoots him to death. Yeehaw. Lessons Learned: I actually think this game is an important one to get out there, as I was completely unprepared for it and it made for an incredibly frustrating experience. There are two things that you really need to consider as you play versus Bunny Farm: consider the threat ranges involved, and how to stop the Bulldozing. Something that was lost in the old forums is that if you make a triangle with three models of the same base size base to base then none of those models can be pushed via Bulldoze. Geometry for the win. Bear in mind that you still have to keep those other two models alive! There may actually be a use for Lynus and Edrea after all….lol, jk. This game also highlighted one of my bigger fears for this list, that it is weak into gunlines. For another example of Ossrum Gone Wrong, check out: Ossrum vs. Butcher3. It happens to Taodark exactly the same as it did to me. Guess I should have warned him…

Game #2 vs. Una, x5 Scarsfells, Pureblood Warpwolf, Gorax, max Tharn Riders, x2 Sentry Stones, x2 Shifting Stones, Support Remember, this is pre-nerf Una, so the Griffons cannot be attacked on her feat turn. Post nerf Una still deserves your respect, but is a lot less scarier. To start things on the wrong foot, he won the roll, went first, and ran everything up. I worked out the threat ranges (both charge and run to block in my caster), barely advanced at all. Midas put out Lucky Shot on 3 Gun Boars (the Splatter got the 4th) and Death March on the Brigands. I mostly just tried to get some long distance scatters on his Griffons and boost the Pow 10’s for damage, did a little bit here and there. On his turn, Una feated, the Wolf Riders came in, killed a few Brigands and repositioned into the woods, the Griffons jammed me, the Pureblood let out a nasty Hand of Fated spray. On my turn, I got to work: One of the chickens was not engaged, Midas tagged him with Calamity. The Brigands used Vengeance to get into position, aimed, and blew it away then reformed. The two Gun Boars took free strikes from the Griffon engaging them, backed up and put boosted damage rolls into it, Pow 10 and Pow 13, respectively; killing it. Rorsh disengaged Brine with Diversionary Tactics. Battle Boar Primal’d Brine and slammed a Gun Boar into a Griffon, knocking it down. Brine went and killed a Pureblood. Splatter Boar hits the KD Griffon with a boosted Pow 14, Targ Ancillary shots him for a second Pow 14 and a kill. Ambushers come in, kill 3 of the Wolf Riders and damage the 5th Griffon moderately. Not a bad kill count for Una’s feat turn. To save about 5 more turns, we Grind it out and he is able to win on Scenario. I simply lacked the speed to contest after not being able to advance more than 3” Turn 1. However, I did very handily have the game on attrition. Lessons Learned: It isn’t easy to take much concrete from this as Una did get nerfed, as well as my ability to self slam. Despite the loss I left quite happy with how the list performed. I felt that I started with a lot stacked against me, between losing Turn 1 and it being a live scenario. After a few games, the list and positioning were starting to gel in my mind, and I think that the list could have some serious legs. One change that I was considering was dropping down to a minimum unit of Commandos and adding in Hutchuck. These two games, and there were a couple others besides them, including a terrible one into Horgol where neither one of us could manage to actually assassinate the other, led me into this match up on video, here is the link for viewing pleasure. Overall, I think this ended up being a pretty robust way of building the Thornfall Alliance theme force using Midas.

Mostly to experiment, and partly because I was bored, I decided to give Helga a run in the Thornfall Alliance Theme force. After Midas, she was the one I felt best suited to maximize the combined arms nature of the theme. Helga has always been a bit of a riddle to me, I can never quite settle on a list that I particularly like for her. After some inward reflection, I determined that I have in the past made best use of her as a primary assassin, secondary attrition caster. For those unaware of the 17” Helga assassination of doom: Cast Dash Charge 9” (11” threat) Cyclone 6” (17” thread) Feat Take Cyclone Swing on Target (boost) Redirect Charge Swing on Target (boost) With luck target is either a) your opponent’s warcaster or b) something you just slammed into your opponent’s warcaster. Once they are knocked down, proceed to fire at will. You can also Cyclone then Charge, but doing it in this order gives Helga an extra attack once she reaches her final destination. Be aware, if you screw this up or dice it, 99% of the time, she will be dead. Fortunately pre-measuring has gone a long way to removing the risk from this strategy. My first list looked something like this: Helga the Conqueror -Battle Boar -War Hog -War Hog Efaarit Scout Efaarit Scout Saxon Orrik Farrow Brigands (max) -Warlord Farrow Brigands (max) -Warlord Farrow Commandos (max) Razorback Crew Razorback Crew Farrow Bone Grinders (min) In general I am happy with this list, It maximize the free points from the theme (17), grants access to Hambushers, and has lots and lots of guns. The one area where I had to compromise is with the War Hogs. I would much, much rather have Road Hogs in the list, but given that Helga is my primary win condition, bringing Saxon along to grant her pathfinder is just too much to pass up. So I must console myself that she can also Bulldoze herself in order to bump whatever she needs to during the assassination run. I played it on Advanced Maneuvers vs. Iron Lich W and Scavarous: link. Lessons Learned: Both the War Hogs and the Commandos were dead points...sort of. You definitely want heavies in the list, and for this list build you definitely want them to be Road Hogs. The Commandos technically did their job, which was to make his caster uncomfortable, but they never actually made an attack. So going forward, I decided to min the Ambushers, drop the Bone Grinders for a Razorback Crew, and take 2 Road Hogs and Targ (I had to jump through some hoops due to the free theme points). Helga the Conqueror -Battle Boar -Road Hog -Road Hog -Targ Efaarit Scout Efaarit Scout Saxon Orrik Farrow Brigands (max) -Warlord Farrow Brigands (max) -Warlord Farrow Commandos (min) Razorback Crew Razorback Crew The following weekend I had the ability to attend a local tournament, where I was able to drop Helga in two rounds and field test this new list in the wild! Helga vs: Issyria, Chimera, Hyperion, HRT, Sentinels, Invictors, Support. There is a lot of rough terrain, and he has a wall on his side near-ish to a flank. Won the roll, ran up; he did the same. Most importantly he moved Issy to cower behind a wall near a board edge… Ambushers Hambushed, killed the HRT and popped 2 CRA's into Issy, the first was canceled by focus, the second did 7 damage. Also killed the Chimera with shooting. This put a ton of pressure on Issy, so she left her bunker and moved centrally, cast Blinding Light on a Brigand unit and Crusaders Call, sent in the Sentinels and Invictors to kill/jam. A scout got into combat with Issy, then Helga did the Helga thing. Feat kill.

Hegla vs: Issyria, Chimera, Hyperion, Sentinels, Nyss Hunters, Support. Terrain is important in that there is a forest in the middle of the board that I used to keep between Hyperion and Helga. Well...ok then, at least I know what is coming? Won the roll, ran up, unpacked a wee bit better this time, practice and all. He ran on up as well, I think he intended to Blinding Light the Brigands and forgot? I keep to my usual tournament format of being totally open and friendly with information but not pointing out tactical mistakes for my opponent. My turn, Hambushers Hambush and a min Commandos wipes out 7 Nyss. Bwahaha. Brigands take down 8 Sentinels as well. Other Brigands soften up the Chimera so that a Road Hog can kill it and Lightning Strike back. Issyria feats, his Nyss turn and kill 4/6 Commandos, Hyperion shoots stuff, Sentinels kill a Road Hog, pop minifeat and sit at Arm 22. Razorbacks aim and bust up every other Sentinel, Brigands kill all but the UA, who lives on one health. He also survives Saxon. And the Battle Boar. Helga finally has to go in and gang gank kill him, Lightning Strike back. Efaarit starts shooting the Hyperion, Commandos fiddle with Nyss, Road Hog misses Eiryss, and Brigands randomly get box cars to melee her to death (?!?!). His turn, more attrition. My turn, Helga runs to grab a flag and stay 0.5" out of Hyperions threat. Razorbacks and Efaarit start shooting it some more. Brigands kill off 2/3 Mechaniks. Other Nyss and Brigands play in the woods some more. His turn, more attrition, my turn I finally drop Hyperion and eventually get to the point of winning on CP with about 4 minutes left. Woo that one was a grind. Lessons Learned: Both games were tough Grinds. I ended up being supremely happy with the performance of my Commandos. In both games they excelled, and I have no regrets with taking just a min unit. In the majority of cases, I’d venture that more is not better in this case. I was very nervous about being able to take down a Hyperion as this list is not generally geared towards taking down armor, but sandpapering it down over several turns while I clogged it up ended up being quite effective. On the Brigand front, they like to Prey Sentinels. A lot. Overall I am happy with where the list is right now, I need to either practice or dojo it into some other match ups. I have a sneaking suspicion that if I want it to cover the Cryx match I am going to need to swap my objective out to the Arcane one to grant magical weapons. Additionally I need a better Turn 1 unpacking plan. The Rat 4 on the Razorback Crews hurts a lot, and it is much better for them to aim and scoot from Turn 2 onward. In no game did I put them in a position to set them up for success. Side note: I did not AD them in any of these games, be better than me.

With the release of the Blindwater Congregation Theme, I got deep into the dojo. Due to Colin Hill’s battle reports on the Circle Forums (gone now, thanks PP!), I was already considering Rask with Gatormen Posse. Colin had piloted Kreuger with Tharn quite well, and the lists seemed to share quite a bit in common. So with a theme that buffed the GMP, everything fit right into place. The list also basically built itself, which is another thing that I appreciate. Rask, Blindwater Congregation -Blackhide Wrastler -Blackhide Wraster Wrong Eye -Snapjaw Gatorman Posse (max) Gatorman Posse (max) Gatorman Posse (max) Swamp Gobbo Bellows Crew Totem Hunter (free) Mist Speaker (free) Since I seldom make it out to weekday game nights, I just signed up for a tournament to practice my list. I hadn’t actually played Rask in Mk3, so might as well jump in both feet first! I paired the list with Carver just because, but went in with the intention of playing Rask as much as possible. Game #1 vs. Moshar, Doppledog, 2 Woldwyrds, 2 Stalkers, Alten, 2 Scouts, Stones, Bloodtrackers (min). As it so happens I’d just caught some Moshar dojo on Muse (?), and so I came into this game with a certain expectation of his gameplan: teleport Moshar, use the Doppledog Animus to drop Rask to Def 5, kill Rask. I am not a fan of Plan Kill Rask, so I prioritize his infantry, and then the Argus. I win the roll, go first, and run on up. He assaults the GMP with the Bloodtrackers, kills one. Moshar zips forward, kills Totem Hunter with a Crevasse, sprays some more GMP, zips back to safety. I see an opportunity to leverage extreme scenario pressure on him given that his list has approximately 6 models and mine has 50,000 (ballpark). GMP go in to kill the Bloodtrackers with the rerolls, out of 5 Gators, 1 attack actually connects (that is 20 die rolls). So...poop. But the one that does kill was the chick contesting the center flag at least. I also grab the right flag. I make sure to not force my beasts because I don’t want to deal with Moshar’s feat with no rewards. I also feat this turn. He has to come in to contest, but he (hopefully) cannot do much damage. His response is limited, he moves the Efaarit, and Alten up and takes shots, same with the Wyrds. Stalkers move up as well, some pillars get dropped in awkward places. All in all, 3 dead GMP, all the flags are contested. My turn, GMP redeem themselves and eat the remaining Bloodtrackers. Rask moves up, tries to Paralyze the Stalker, misses (#$%#!!!), Admonitions himself just in case the puppy comes for him, casts Fury on OG Wrastler, Gobbers block LOS to Rask from the Wyrds. Snapjaw goes into the Warpwolf, leaves him on 3 health, GMP finish him. OG Wrastler goes and gets himself Warpwolf #2. The other Wrastler has no Spirit and I forgot to heal him, so he just durdles into the way of the Woldwyrds. I go up to 2-0. On his turn he kills off some more models, but has no significant contesting power and I am able to get up to 3-0 on his turn, 5-0 the following turn.

Game #2 vs. Haley3, x2 Grenadiers, Thorn, Hammersmith, Stormlances (max), Trenchers (max), Jr., Charger, Ragman, Rhupert, maybe some other bullshit. [Rant] I understand that PP is self titillated by the #designspace of Haley3, but they have basically created a NPE monster. Not unbeatable, just a huge, messy, sticky NPE. [/rant] Ok, time to get to work, because this match up sucks. I win the roll off because I am awesome, and go first, running up. Admonition on new Wrastler, Veil of Mists to block off some LOS. Haley puts up her spells and ghost and cloudwalls. Everyone’s mouths drop in surprise. I am trying to save my feat a little bit, and to start poking holes in his cloud wall. Totem Hunter goes in an punks a Trencher, but doesn’t get to sprint away because I forget that Trenchers have 1” reach, oops. One GMP takes to the hill with Dirge for Def 16, in an attempt to start to turn his flank. Veil of Mists gets scooted up a bit more, the Wrastlers take to the woods, but no LOS, Gobbers extend the wood LOS blocking wall, and I brace for gunfire. He shifts around a little bit, but ultimately just shoots and reclouds. All in all I only lose 3 Posse, which isn’t terrible. The Red unit of Gators backs up out of Snapjaw’s way, the Mist Speaker gives him magical weapons and he goes and kills off Baby Haley. My Wrastlers move into the woods so they can now see out. Rask moves up, grabs the flag, feats, Admonitions himself. Posse move in to jam, one is able to walk in and eat a Trencher. 1-0 CP. Hammersmith kills off one gator, Grenadier kills another. Trenchers CRA into Snapjaw, roll poorly on damage. Charger shoots him up a bit as well. Haley brings back her past echo, Granny Haley moves to contest. Snapjaw goes in on Thorn with the help of the Posse, rips up his movement, cortex, and arc node. Posse tear into the Charger as well, leaving just the movement. Gobbers cloud to block the Storm Lance’s LOS to Snapjaw. Wrastler gets Magical Weapons, eats Granny Haley. Posse get Fury, Rask disrupts the Hammersmith. GMP kill a Grenadier, two Stormlances, and a Trencher. 2-0 CP. Hammersmith KDs 3 Gators, killing 1. Haley feats, Baby Haley charges a Wrastler, trying to get LoS to Rask. This triggers Admontion and Rask stays on the flag, but moves out of LOS. She misses the charge attack (!!!), and the follow up attack, ends up Force Hammering him 1.5” and reforming with Tactical Supremacy.Trencher tries to sneak in to contest, but gets eaten instead. More things get shot up a bit more. 3-0 CP. My turn I manage to clear off the Stormlance, Ragman, and Trenchers from his flag, 5-0 CP.

Game #3 vs. Makeda2, Despoiler, Krea, Paingivers, Legends, x2 Ferox, Rhadeim, x2 Willbreakers. This game is versus our Store Wars team leader, ATC participant, and all around bad ass, the Kang of the West Virginia Appalachian Cup. Hail to the Kang, Baby. And if you have yet to come up against this particular list...it is awful. Absolutely awful. The Ferox have Tough, Steady, and Dodge, combined with 6 Stay Deaths a turn from Makeda. Also with Dash they can advance 9”, Leap 5”, and still have 2” Reach, or the boosted damage Kitty Attack. And the Legends are no picnic now either. I also tilted so hard this game that I forgot snacking, maybe some extra healing would have helped? I paid attention to snacking in my other two games and literally never got to, only the health GMP got kills, go figure. Being a bad ass myself, I go first again, run on up. Admonition on a Wrastler, and Veil of Mists to help the Posse get through the woods. He runs up too, trying to bait me with a Ferox. My turn, I move Veil to over my objective so that my models can move through it next turn, Fury on a Posse, reshuffle so he can’t leap and kill Rask or Wrong Eye, feat. His turn 2 involves committing a single kitty to not kill the Totem Hunter. With all that positioning out of the way, we now can play the game. Totem Hunter kills the kitty twice, it toughs both times. Wrastler goes in and kills a kitty 6 times, misses the final attack and it dodges away. Admonition Wrastler gets Boundless Charge, he kills the objective. 2 units of GMP go in and fail to kill another 2 Ferox, the 3rd unit manages to bring down my first Ferox. So 1-0 CP, and one dead Ferox...not a great start. He leaps around and bites my gators a bunch. Despoiler goes for the Wrastler, who Admonitions away. A couple Ferox drop him down to 9ish health anyway with charges. I think I lose 3 GMP total? My next turn is grind, grind, grind. I kill 2 Legends, 3 Ferox, and annoyingly cannot get a heavy to the Despoiler. His turn Makeda has to cut for fury bc the Despoiler didn’t get to do anything last turn, then grind, grind, grind. Frustratingly, the Despoiler is able to wipe out both Wrastlers, and I am down to 7 GMP left, my army is getting thin. Rask puts Admonition on himself, Fury on Snapjaw, and Paralyzes the Despoiler. Snapjaw goes and kills it, but it takes all his fury. GMP account for another 3 Ferox as well, Wrong Eye gets a fourth. We are getting super low on time, he has under 10 minutes left, so Makeda goes for the assassination. Orin pops a shot into my objective, eleaps to Rask, and boosts 5 damage. Makeda comes forward, casts Dash, Stormrager on a Ferox, feats. The Ferox moves to leap to Rask, but in doing so triggers Admonition and Rask moves out of range. They redirect their leaps and kill Wrong Eye and Snapjaw instead. The Willbreaker puts an offensive Puppet Strings onto the GMP. I am out of clock and attrition, so it is my turn to assassinate. Rask moves over and boosts a paralysis shot into Makeda, misses. He puts Fury on the GMP, drops Veil of Mists over Rhadiem. Ultimately I am able to get 2 Posse fully onto Makeda without taking free strikes, I try to get a 3rd to reach in, but he dies to free strikes. Without Paralysis, I need 9’s to hit, which with the reroll is about 50/50 (like 48%?). The first charge hits, he forces a Puppet Strings reroll, I miss, I Cold Blooded reroll, hit again, and after all that drama...5 damage on 3D6, lol. The bite attack misses. The next charge attack hits, 10 damage, he transfers. The final attack also hits, I roll an 8 damage, which combined with him cutting himself earlier in the game is actually enough to kill her. Ay caramba. Lessons Learned: Overall, a good day for Rask and the theme. Ultimately I think this is a solid, strong Rask list, but not something that people will have to tech for. Same for the buffs to the Posse, solid, but not over the power curve. They are essentially 90% of what they were a year ago. I still felt a hit from the Mat 7 to 6 drop, even with the rerolls getting at higher defense models where you need the dice to reach is very difficult at times. Like with the Bloodtrackers, I needed 8’s, and I was cranking out those 7’s, or versus Haley, they swung on Baby Haley needing 10’s (back arc), and I was cranking out 9’s. It is those moments in particular when you really are looking for that Mat boost. Losing Pathfinder is also rough, I was crutching on Veil of Mists pretty hard and think that may be a lasting weakness to the theme. Durability-wise, GMP still hate getting shot at, still hate getting charged, nothing has changed there. Rask supports them especially well because he has the feat to help deliver the little guys. The theme does not make them supermen, just better; although the leap from 5 to 8 boxes is huge. I will also add that the list is grindy as hell, despite my cavalier write ups, all of these games were the last ones to finish each round, and I went sub 10 minutes on clock in rounds 2 and 3. Part of this is likely practice (first games with Rask in Mk3, and like...2nd time with Gators?), part is match up (Salt Pillars, Haley Cloud Wall, and...I don’t have something clever for Makeda, but THAT LIST), and part is just the way the list is built. Just something to be aware of, it is not a quick assassination list. I did feel a keen lack of guns, and am toying with swapping both Wrastlers out for Spitters and seeing how that ends up for me. Or dropping WE/SJ for Wrastler, Spitter, Spitter. Hope you enjoyed the wall of text, will add photos when able.

Great write up Gaston, congratulations on the wins! Seems like that would have been a brutal and stressful day! Amusingly I had forgotten Makeda had cut herself, so I did not realize I won the last round until my opponent shook my hand. But match up wise, my area is not gentle.

Theme: Blindwater Congregation
Rask - WB: +27 - Blackhide Wrastler - PC: 16 - Ironback Spitter - PC: 15 - Ironback Spitter - PC: 15
Bog Trog Mist Speaker - PC: 4 Bog Trog Mist Speaker - PC: 0 Totem Hunter - PC: 0

I don't hate it, it is 1 pt down which is inelegant, but you sneak in dual Mistys. I had Wrong Eye in the initial build because they can run independently of Rask, but they also synergize so well with him. Losing them is a hit, but I can readily see the potential of running a battlegroup like this.

That Helga list is basically exactly the way I want to run the Farrow theme. I just always feel like my opponents casually sweep away my Brigands and have too much armor for Road Hogs (I play against Khador a lot, so maybe that is the problem). I think you must have hypnotized your opponents into putting valuable squishy assets on the far flanks to get shot by the Hambushers.
