Hey Everyone,
was hoping to post this a while ago but Life has been Crazy and I just have not had time to sit down and bust out these bat reps!
I went to NOVA Open for my first major convention It was a blast I met the Miniwargaming guys, Tim Banky, and some other folks I watch on youtube/internets and loved every minute of it. I only went for one day but It was enough to make me want to do more of these cons. I recommend it for anyone in the area.
Anyway, here are the lists I took to the event Ill give my reasons for the pairing and why I think this pairing is one of the better options we have in circle.
*Shout out to LoS Jaden for helping me work out the kinks in my lists gonna throw in a plug for his druids dice and Line of sight podcasts, dude knows his stuff and has helped me grow as a player.*
The Lists:
Wurmwood:
Megalith
Pureblood
2 Woldwyrds
Celestial Fulcrum
2 Sentry Stones
shifting stones
2 gallows grove
Hutchuck Ogrun Bounty Hunter
min bone grinders
Baldur 2- BoO
2 Woldwraths
Megalith
2 Sentry Stones
2 Stoneshapers
Wayfarer
So I will start with the wurmwood List breakdown.
I have been playing Wurmwood for a few months now. I have been running a version of this list with Loki instead of the fulcrum and blackclads instead of hutchuck. Over time I just found Loki to be incredibly inconsistent and too vulnerable to bad dice. I am pretty awful with my luck with him and tend to roll4 or less on boosted hit rolls every time I shoot his hook. Its that bad I am not exaggerating at all I swear. In a tournament setting I just cannot afford to hinge a game plan on 1 dice roll and I think this is one of the most s=massive flaws with Loki. He can be incredibly potent, but all it takes is that one bad roll and suddenly you are down a 19 point heavy for nothing. I think ellish garrity will alleviate this as puppet master is amazing on models like Loki and in the circle faction. (not to mention the new minions solo that give it out as well.)
After messaging LoS Jaden an asking for some list advice he recomend I try the fulcrum and boy was that a drastic change in the list. I had always ran the list as a guerilla style gunline that could commit if needed after adding in the fulcrum the list became more...durable, more reliable, better turn by turn output and gained some monstrous anti infantry potential. The combination of consistent good pow, good rat, boostable shooting from the fulcrum as well as the fury management on my wyrds meant I could push this list to the limits turn by turn. If I kept the fulcrum on a flank, I didn't even care about it not benefitting from wurmwoods feat.
Anyway overall the list plays strongly into attrition and it is a mid ranged gun-line first and foremost. It also has some seriously crazy assassination angles with the wyrds, fulcrum and pureblood combined with hellmouth and shifting stones. I have had a lot of success with it and it is incredibly potent.
As for Bladur 2, a lot of people on here bag on him becasue PP seems to love giving out blessed like candy. While this trend concerns me I will honestly say this.
Baldur 2 is by far the best circle drop into Cygnar and Cryx in my experience. Double wraths say no to spells, are practically immune to shooting just by being durable and healing and can put down some serious hurt. If spell piercer casters start showing up more in those two factions then Ill cosnider a new pair, but I never leave home without him. Baldur 2 also covers a lot of wurmwoods weaknesses particularly mass pathfinder/LOS ignoring list which are actually pretty common sadly. I have a list I tested a lot more with heavies and more support but until wold CiD becomes official I wills tick to this list as It is my only hope into harkevitch jack spam and vyross 2 who pop up a lot. I need the wraths hitting power to get me through those grinds and while my other list is spectacular it is not spell immune which is huge in a lot of match ups.
Now for the fun part of describing my battle reports evaluating my mistakes and trying to remember all this. I forgot to take pictures thanks to time stress and phone being slow which is sad but Oh well just bear with me guys!
Round 1: Into grymkin:
My opponent had a King of Nothing beast brick and the heretic with loads of dudes. I expected him to drop KoN because baldur 2 is allergic to blessed skin and moans but he ended up dropping the heretic and so I felt confident with wurmwood into the dude list. The scenario was spread the net and there was a huge forest in the middle of the table.
My opponents list was to the best of memory:
Heretic
Skin and Moans
Cage Rager
2 Gorehounds
2 Hallwomen with UA
trapper kin
longfellow
dread rots
piggybacks
He chose tables sides and I chose first turn to get better positioning for my guns.
Turn 1:
Circle: I am a little more cautious and positions a good chunk of my forces behind the
Grymkin: He basically runs like a madman.
Turn 2:
Circle: I shoot a crap ton of attacks into the not shield walled piggybacks but lots of 1's and 2's later and I have done about 2 damage to a few of them. Wurmwoods tries to stranglehold the Skin and Moans and does it just barely. Porting cassius back and creating a forest camping nothing. My bone grinders stab everyone but the leader for tasty souls.
Grymkin: He positions more, kills some manikins and a gallows grove that is contesting my flag and contests my rectangular zone with a gorehound scoring 2 points.
Turn 3:
Circle: Hutchuck is a boss and kills a clump of hallowmen after ambushing and kills leader with his charge. My opponent triggers reckoning on him I proceed to kill the gorehound, the trapperkin, the skin and moans, and some other infantry. I also feat. Score is 3-1
Grymkin: He kills some manikins. hutchuck and contest my rectangular zone with hallowmen thats about it. score 4-1
Turn 4
Circle: I clear the zone again and leave him with a few dread rots, a single piggyback and 1 cage rager. score is now 5-2
Grymkin: last 2 hallowmen form the unit contest my rectangular zone. and the left hallowmen contest my flag. scorte is 6-2
Turn 5:
Circle:This is where I make some horrible mistakes because of low clock and nerves. Cassius caps the flag Megalith kills the gorehound, pops animus and sits in his rectangular zone. I clear out the hallowmen, kill all but 2 dread rots and then use a pureblood to kill a piggyback...and trigger the shadow...he puts a skin and moans in my rectangular and round zone. I panick because now a skin and moans is about to kill my pureblood right? I back up the fulcrum like an idiot and end my turn...7-3
Grymkin: I remind my opponent hallowmen have apparition and he is able to apparate out of melee with megs and run to contest the flag. 8-3.
Wow...guys...I am so embarrassed of this. I had the game in lock down and lost because I panicked. All I had to do was 1: Kill the piggyback with a woldwyrd instead of the pureblood. and 2: Run the fulcrum to contest his flag where only the heretic was. I do those 2 things and I just flat win the game. Most likely scoring 3-4 points a turn till turn 7 and contesting my opponents flag. (I had enough time to do this) Overall I feel like I choked on this one. I did not practice enough in timed environments with wurmwood and it bit me in the butt. My opponent was excellent and I have played him before one of the best opponents i have ever played against for sure. I think I should have adhered more to scenario. I was overconfident and more focused on killing than I was to the very active and live scenario that my opponent played around perfectly. All I needed to do was base my flag a turn earlier and this is a completely different game. I think that was my biggest take from this match. I need to cool down, think, and focus pay attention to points.
My opponent had a cage rage and 2 dread rots at the end of the game, I had everything but hutchuck and 2 gallows groves. Ugh...such a sad ending but still an excellent hard fought game! Kudos to my opponent for playing the scenario.
