I agree with most of what you said, my main issue is this. Sentinels are good against heavies and the things that prey on infantry. If you can deliver them and then use the arm buf they are a nightmare to remove as heavies cant do it fast enough and infantry are unreliable. Rys are decent against heavies (and cheaper which is also good) but are eaten by things that kill infantry, especially guns. In general heavies don't clear out infantry well anyways, or if they do its the low cost high fury heavies that have 6+ attacks ala walking warpwolf feral which is going to get everyone in range regardless of defensive stats. I'm still hopeful for a good theme. Also replacing hard with something else, that is such a corner case rule... Heavies don't tend to have a problem killing ARM20 with one box, nor hitting DEF12. Sentinals are certainly better at KILLING heavies but they don't take the retaliation well. They're also vulnerable to getting charge since they're slow and low DEF and ARM matters even less against charging models. Ryssovass need more help getting in but are much better at staying there than most of our other infantry. Halbs in Shield Wall are close but the difference between DEF13 and 14 is surprisingly high against average MAT stats. I don't think any of our infantry straight-up replaces any other (well, I don't like Infiltrators but that's more personal preference than any sort of math). Ryss are a great tarpit that has more consistent damage than Halbs, more survivability than Sentinals, Swordsmen or Infiltrators, and are cheap to boot. The Priest is a nice bonus to get their accuracy really high and Aelyth is just cool, though situational. A theme would certainly help but I don't think they need a theme to be useful.

In a theme their low points cost works against getting free models. Take all the nyss units we have and you end up 9 points shy of 3 free solos.
Presumably some solos count towards the total, do you can take two priests and add a soulless to get your free solos, which I guess would be Aelyth and Lanyssa and an arcanist?

I usually prefer units like nyss or mage hunters (maybe even invictors? Though i've never fielded them against cryx), because a ranged presence makes all the difference against cryx infantries (and they also have def 14). Also, precision strike is relatively wasted, as the faction doesn't often make use of many jacks. Still, maybe tough makes a difference? Which caster do you use them with? My problem with Cryx is Dark Host with a ton of Prowl and terrain/spells which grant Concealment. It makes ranged armies a lot less threatening unless they bring Riflemen + Thane or Issyria for the feat. They also have Bane Riders who threaten longer than most of our infantry (and are Prowl'ed until they go in). Maybe Halberdiers since they have Set Defence? Or just play Issyria? I was thinking Ghyrrshyld for the feat Concealment and Revive but I see that more experienced players have had different approaches, so I'm inclined to listen to them.

Elara2 also removes stealth quite effectively, though you probably need double chimera in order to land marked for death. She also improves all the threat ranges. You could also try kaelyssa, both for phantom hunter (which solves stealth and concealment/cover) and the no charging effect (one more shooting turn). I recently tried kaelyssa with three daemons and Hyperion against an infantry swarm and it was pretty satisfying getting 3 model (occasionally 4, but also 2 once the opponent learn to mind the 2" distance) under vortex cannon. Coven Dark Host is still a difficult match up, but it can be done. Well Ghyrrshyld against cryx could be useful especially for mage sight, i think. But it seems to be the most dangerous of the anti-stealth methods, since you have to put the caster quite forward in order to get many models completely within 14".
