mattmcdThanks. It's really just dark silver paint with black and brown washes finished with lighter silver highlights. It was a tip from my friend who's been painting minis much longer than I have. It's really simple and makes me actually like painting metals. One reason I'm really looking forward to getting those armored trolls like warders, haha.

I think my first layer must be too bright. Off to the hobby shop this weekend! Lol

mattmcd I'm using GW's Leadbelcher for my silver metals and it's pretty dark to begin with. But I wouldn't say it's impossible to darken a brighter paint to similar shade with multiple thin wash layers, though. --- On another note, I seem to be picking up the pace with bases. ...that sounds so much like a bad dad level joke when read aloud. Nothing too fancy with axer's base. Just keep some variety going on. Impaler and Ragnor's bases are waiting for small detail additions but at this rate my battlebox models should be ready in no time!

FINALLY. I borrowed my fiancée's phone for pictures (because I'm living in the past AKA I don't have a smartphone) and recruited her to provide better lighting and now I have a bunch of pictures to post! First up, the battlebox warlock Ragnor! I'm not 100% happy how the runes came out, I misjudged how bright the light blue I was using would be next to the greys. I realized it at a point when the model was almost finished so re-doing would've meant re-doing the stone around them as well. So basically right now I'm just leaving them as they are but who knows, maybe in the future I might re-do them with a different color.

Next up, troll bouncer. This was actually the first model from the battlebox I finished painting. A close-up of the shield because I'm very pleased with it.

I don't care if EBDT isn't a top notch troll beast, I just want to field this mofo because he came out so damn well. My slag troll's paint job is finished, too but he's still lacking a base for now. I started it the other day but I glued the cork bit on a wrong spot and had to tear it off. So I'll be re-doing that at some point... So obviously I ended up doing very simple front arcs and I'm happy with how they turned out! I was going to do them with a very bright green (GW's Warpstone Glow) at first to make them stand out but I ended up leaving them with the darker - Caliban Green - in the end. Sometimes basecoat ends up being the final layer lol.

Love them! Your Ragnor looks great, and I love the stitching all over. I looked at yours and decided I'm going to use higher contrast between the colors as you have. It looks great.
The Earthborn is one of my favorite beasts! He doesn't pack a huge punch, but he is amazing for the piece trade game because he often takes two beasts/jacks to remove, so he initiates great trades OR he surprises the enemy and is still alive when they have placed their army planning on him being dead.
But enough strategy talk in the painting thread! Ha! Much nicer pics, and great painting! Thanks for sharing.

mattmcdThank you! I figured trolls wouldn't spend time color coordinating stuff (especially the beast variants) so haphazardly different colored stitches it was. Hence the not so tidy armors as well. Nice to hear EBDT can actually be useful! I bought him pretty much on a whim since my LGS had one sitting in their shelf so I wouldn't have to order one online. Plus I love how the model looks so why not. I still haven't had a chance to actually play so I'm all ears when it comes to strategy. Miniature games in general aren't a huge deal at my LGS - at least compared to Magic - and even then, GW stuff dominates it quite heavily. On top of that, I think my local meta swings more towards Warmachine. I know only one person besides me who has a Hordes army. I suppose it's a good thing I got a slag troll lol.

I'm in the same situation regarding meta. Warmachines is far more popular than Hordes. That's part of the reason I like playing Trolls at the moment. I feel it levels the playing field a tad bit with me playing against someone who has only had a few Trolls games under their belt.
Also, I think you made the right call on your bases. They look great! I think a brighter green could have clashed.

mattmcdThat's actually a good point. Maybe I'll have it a bit easier with more experienced players if they haven't faced trolls too many times... I think Warmachine is more popular here because it came first. I remember when it was a new thing here and I actually checked their website to see how the models looked like. Back then, I wasn't too impressed. There was little to choose from and tbh, I kinda find all the jacks looking almost the same, only with different colors... Checking the website again, I noticed the Hordes side and ooh boy, did I see cool things, haha. I was thinking to add narrow metallic lines where the two colors meet on the bases but in the end I don't think they actually need them. It was more of a back-up plan if the seam would've turned out too messy lol.

Agreed! Aesthetically, Trolls was my favorite by far!

Here to eat your jacks and pocket change. Not the best possible pictures but they were the best I could manage. For some reason the lighting got effed up BADLY with a flashlight providing more light from the above (read: it looked like I didn't use flash at all) so it wasn't as optimal as I would've wanted. But they're not THAT bad. I think I've mentioned it before somewhere that the slag's skin turned out a bit darker than I intended but I'm quite happy with it anyway. It's not green like the others but there's still an obvious green tint to tie him together with the rest of my trolls. The metallic bits on his skin are in three different metals; silver, gold and brass. I did the bits on top of his head and the ones running down on his neck with the more reddish gold to kind of emulate the red hair my other trolls have. That piece of mangled up metal on the base is actually a piece of a clear plastic cup! I honestly thought the paint wouldn't stay on it but lo and behold, there it is and there it stays. I chose red paint for it to give the miniature some contrast since there's a lot of green going on. Also, my meta has at least one Khador player soooo... subliminal messaging?
