Should have given them red tartans, though. Greenskin-saying; "red ones go faster!"

@gijsb They're just angry for getting mistaken for orcs, I bet. That, or they're hungry. Maybe both. marijnhHaha, well at least they have red hair so... built-in fastness? But there might be red tartans in the future, I still have a lot of trollkins to buy.

IT'S ALMOST DONE. He did turn out a bit darker than I planned but I'm still pretty pleased with the outcome. There ARE highlights, however I like to do very subtle highlighting plus the lighting is terrible for pictures.

Really nice effect making each metal plate a slightly different color. Really adds a lot to the story of the model.
I'm absolutely adding that effect to my runebearer and others now.
Thanks for sharing!

mattmcdThanks! I really like painting metals such as armor and weapons since it's fairly easy to get a nice result. All I'm using is black and brown washes on GW's Leadbelcher highlighted with Runefang Steel. It gives individual results based on how much wash I'm using. Brown wash (or Agrax Earthshade as it's called) is absolutely perfect for getting a nice, dirty looking armor. Works on pretty much any metal color.

I've seen a few people do green trolls but they always seem to go too bright and cartoony gor my liking. These, however, are fantastic. Props

maVooThanks. I like muted and more earthy greens myself so opting to do foresty themed trolls was a natural choice. Plus I had the paints ready since I originally bought them for painting kroots from 40k, haha.

Something something WIPs. First two fennblades under way... Trying to decide what color to use for the little gems on those... collar thingies. Maybe blue? THE BIG GUY. Slowly getting it together. Greenstuffed the back and other small gaps. The arms will have to wait for a while to get glued on since I gotta figure out what kinda pose I want for him. there are totally no Blood Bowl models in the background

Nice! Looking good. Blue sounds good for the gem. Mine ended up orange (I bought them painted as part of a lot). I think blue would provide more contrast than orange and in my short experience high contrast is key.

mattmcdI was thinking of orange, too but I think it would require a grey metal background to look good. Contrasts tend to be important like that. Also just realized I have turquoise paints as well so I guess I'm gonna be choosing between them and blue. Plus, I gotta figure out the tartans... I was thinking of doing same colors as with my Borka but now I'm not certain anymore. Might try to do a bit different red-dominant tartan to make them really pop out from all the metal and green.

Yout Borka tartan looks great. I think blue or red provides contrast and will look great. I have two units and was planning to do different tartan colors to tell them apart (as well as likely doing green skin after feeling inspired checking yours out).

mattmcdThanks, I'm quite fond of it myself, too. It certainly looks a whole lot better than Ragnor's tartan but it was my first time painting tartan so there's my excuse (that and my color sense isn't top notch). My idea of doing the same colored tartans for the fennblades as for Borka was to kind of tie the unit to the warlock. Kind of like his personal unit or something. Might do the same for some other unit for Ragnor, maybe runeshapers? But we'll see.

I've got the same blood bowl models on my painting table! 😂 Your work is looking great! I love the tartans and the overall dark green of your trolls.

tapecrawler Thanks! I'm a bit surprised how much positive feedback I've received about it. I was expecting at least one or two people to get all iffy about it not being the studio scheme. Hi-five for the skaven then. I would've preferred Lizardmen but alas, there's no boxed team for them and they're not apparently very beginner friendly. So rats it is, then. On the other hand, I'm gonna have fun painting few of them to be same colors as our pet rats!

Since some wholesales aren't being exactly honest about what they have in stock my LGS shopkeep recommended that I ordered the specific flock from another store which I did (along with other things I needed) and got it in two days. Still waiting for some other WM/H stuff I ordered through my LGS but those are not so crucial as to get my models on bases. So yes, the basing has finally begun! I decided to start with Borka1 and his keg carrier because it's Borka. That's enough of a reason for me. Borka's base for now. Still gotta add some little bits to balance the model itself but otherwise that's pretty much it. He's gonna look pretty damn dramatic lol... Fit for a warlock like him. Mr. Kegs will have pretty simple base. There really isn't much room for... well, anything. I primed the cork bits with thinned down white glue (I read somewhere that it's good to do that to porous materials so they don't soak up so much paint) but I think I thinned it down too much... Ah well, I'm gonna be priming the corks with black anyway. After Borka1 I'm looking to base Ragnor and his battlegroup so I can actually get to play the game. I still haven't decided how to do the front arcs, though...
