Hey,
Currently playing Grymking and wanted to diversify into Warmachine. Got couple factions I am strongly considering. Mercs being one of them. I love aesthetics and they are solid in game as well. I am looking at rolling humans in either irregulars or kingmakers. Wanted to find out what would be a good start in purchasing lists, such as staples, and good way to expand into 75pts. Mercs have no army boxes so I am at loss where to begin. Thanks.

First, look at the Battlebox in the Journeyman league document, it's Magnus1, a Rover, and a Mangler. A good start (with maybe the exception of the Rover).
From there, many people have been going Kingmakers as it is out, and does some fantastic things with some decent units we normally cannot have, i.e. Trenchers, and units to support them, Damiano being a favorite Caster for this setup.

I have glanced at that thread but did not read it because OP mentioned that already has several minis. I have read it fully and did find good bits of information.
I am not playing journeyman, so I am not restricted to slow expansion. New irregulars theme got me interested because it captures the idea of mercenaries.

I am not playing journeyman, so I am not restricted to slow expansion. New irregulars theme got me interested because it captures the idea of mercenaries. Sweet. As mentioned there, sadly any Irregulars advice is subject to an eyebrow raise, as it's not officially released and peoples actual practice games are limited. As always, if you have to option to borrow or proxy models I recommend doing so, as all the well intentioned advice in the world can't account for your personal tactical preferences. Caveats complete. The biggest limitations on Irregulars is that the Battle Engine and Lesser Warlocks (Rorsh/Brine and Wrongeye/Snapjaw) can be taken but don't contribute to free points, which artificially raises their cost by dint of a lack of free solos earned. The list will likely play out as people opting either one of those choices and getting units/warjacks sufficient for 3 solos + filler or straining to get the four solo package. My personal eyeball, skipping a bunch of stuff Warcasters Pro - Damiano, Shae, MacBain, Fiona, Magnus2 Neg - Ashlynn, Bart, Constance, Caine3, Magnus1 Warjacks Pro - Nomad(s), Mangler, Gallant, Buccaneer, Talon, Freebooter Neg - Mariner, Mule, Rocinante Units Pro - Steelhead Halbs, Herne and Jonne, Aiyanna and Holt, Eliminators, Alexia1 Neg - Steelhead Rifles, Hammerfall, Nyss, Thorn Gun Mages Good solo options Eiryss 1 and 2, Kell, Orin This is pending me trying out the various jackmarshalls, they are the models I would look at. There is also a pirate boat of units/solos I was to lazy to get into, though the Shae Irregular list is making hte rounds and should be easily perusable.

Starting from scratch? maaaaaaan that is a trip. Mercs as a faction is gonna kill your wallet. I started my merc collection (like many) as an offshoot from my main faction (Khador). I now own roughly 97% of the faction (no deck guns). I would suggest building a pair you like and branching out from there. The choices are the biggest issue. Are we ignoring Dwarfs? I am assuming we are excluding Cephalyx from this discussion, since they are basically a subfaction within mercs with a steep buy in.

No dwarves and cyphalix. I added stuff up and it is truly pricey and maybe unnecessary for a beginner player. Will definitely keep Mercs on my radar though. Thanks.

yeah, perhaps another faction is more linear with your spending. mercs is the kind of faction you fall into after starting a main faction.

Honestly, I recommended holding off right now, or at least planning your purchases very carefully. Mercs as is are pretty disadvantaged right now due to lack of themes, but they are incoming.
Irregulars looks pretty solid and I am exited for it, and the rules were basically spoiled, so you can always start with a few basic purchases that take you in that direction.
Kingmakers is a good theme but fairly limited in what you can use. I don't recommend it unless you are ok boxing yourself into that linear list build.
The new Resistance list in CID looks really good after recent changes but won't be release until Christmas. There is some nice synergy though in that you can take Cygnar models which can double with Kingmakers.
For casters I recommend you start MacBain, who IMO is the best all around Vanilla Merc caster right now. He can also be taken with Irregulars and Resistance themes so you get a nice overlap. You cant go wrong with Galleon which is one of the better collolsals in the game. Nomads are cheap beater jacks, Manglers are good.
For solos and units see my early comments about planning your purchases. If you want Irregulars style Idrians, Nyss and Steelheads are a go. If you want more thematic play wait for the Resistance to drop and get some Cygnar or Menoth units.

Bart is also a very nice beginner caster, my first along with Ossrum. Getting Bart, a Galleon and some jacks is quite alright pricewise and quite a nice list, freebooters are nice with his feat, buccaneers are neat in combo with the freebooters. Yeah, it's quite sweet.
