So I'm cheap and found out my local store has a copy of Undercity the board game. Not only am I fan of board games, but I've also thought that I could use both the drudges, monstrosity, and freebooters that are in the game for my mercenaries in war machine as well. What are people's experiences? Is the board game fun? Are the models WAAAAY to different to be used in casual games? Is it an alright way to get your hands on some cephalyx stuff?
I'm mostly curious because I have 0 cephalyx stuff at the moment and if I can get away with using the Undercity models (which will then have double purpose hence double the value) I figure it might be an alright Segway into cephalyx for me.

I played the game only one time before and it really needs more terrain so we ended up using our terrain maker skills to add some extra walls and stuff out of foam core. The models themselves are about the exact same size the only issue that you'll have is the monstrosity has actual hands instead of the weapons of the actual usable monstrosity I'm not sure if anybody would be too picky but I would assume it's just a Warden one other thing that you can also do is if you can get the unit leader Crow from the Cutthroats you can have him stand in with nine of your High women that come in the pack since you actually end up getting 20 I believe.

If I remember right, all the Cephalyx models are juuuust off from being correct for the wargame. The Cephalyx model is a hybrid with the Mind Bender's mechanical arms and the Mind Slaver's head. The Drudges are a mishmash of Bender and Slaver parts. And the Monstrosity, as mentioned, isn't any Monstrosity in the wargame (though it's closest to a Warden in concept at least). So all of that would need to be clarified and cleared with an opponent before use.
The board game is good fun. The RPG mechanics are cool, each of the characters plays in a unique and interesting way. I'm not entirely convinced it's worth playing more than once or twice though, but I haven't attempted to either (I don't own it myself).

We have only played once so far (and got a few rules interactions wrong in how some of the villains activate) but the game was quite fun. There are a few other scenarios for the game floating around out there in various PP publications...I don't recall what's out there off the top of my head at the moment though, but it would provide alternate gameplay if you can pick them up. The best thing to do would be to spend some time reading the posts on this site and the PP site. There are a ton of advice, resources, and homebrew topics that folks have posted on the board game forums. I can't speak to multiple game sessions with the same basic scenario having played only the one game, but it is a fun game.
I am pretty sure I read somewhere that they are not legal minis for the tabletop game, but would likely be fine for casual games with the opponents permission. Like mentioned, the figures are slightly different from the official versions, but also of note is that the base sizes are slightly smaller on the board game minis as well...like only by a tiny amount, 1 millimeter or so, but enough to where you would probably want to rebase them for tabletop use.
The board game miniatures material is made of softer plastic which would likely make rebasing or modding them easier (note that I have not yet tried this personally) but also benefits from the heat/cold water fix commonly used on soft plastic like this. I think that PP also had an Insider at one point where this fix was talked about. If you are unfamiliar with the technique, it basically involves heating the mini (boiling water works but a hair dryer does as well, and is safer to use) and then 'shocking' the soft plastic by submersing it in ice water. This helps harden the plastic somewhat and can also help fix any parts of the minis that are bent out of the box.
It is also worth mentioning that if you want to paint them, the color of the mini does have meaning in the board game regarding how the villain minis are placed and activated. If you still want them for gameplay they will need some method of marking them - my plan would be to mark their board game color on the base in some manner.
My plan is to eventually rebase them and use them for an IKRPG campaign as well as board game play. I am still a new player to the tabletop game, but may proxy with them as well since I don't play competitively.
Note that Widower's Woods is also the same thing - minis that are slighly different from their tabletop counterparts, and made of the same type of materials.
*EDIT* I could have sworn that there was a forum here on Loremahordes for the PP board games...can't see where I thought that was now. Perhaps I was thinking of something else.
