read it here. Mercenary theme: The Irregulars - allows all warcasters, warjacks, units, Battle Engines, and character solos (no word on whether the theme overwrites things like the 'rhulic warcaster' 'rule, though I'd guess not. - for every 25 points of units OR warjacks, get a free small or medium based solo or command attachment - Jack Marshalled warjacks gain flank (friendly faction warrior model) - for each unit in the army, one warjack gains advance move I just...don't understand where PP is going with themes. This isn't a theme list, it's just a mercenary army that gives you free stuff for building virtually any list. Why would anyone play out of theme? Hell, I'm having a hard time why someone would play IN a more restrictive theme unless they had a very specific game plan? To be clear, I don't mind this so much IF it's something they're planning to universalize - every faction gets a highly unrestrictive theme that gives free stuff, so that effctively 'playing out of theme' is viable again. I and others have floated that idea before, and it'd be...okay. This theme seems too good for a generic option, though - the bonuses are pretty dang decent - and if this is just something they're going to scattergun (like other unrestrictive themes ie. Heavy Metal,) that's not going to be good for the game. ESPECIALLY if this theme force is their 'nuanced solution' to the merc inclusion in theme issue, and they're just going right back to their original concept on that one.

All Mercenary Character solo effectively means all Mercenary solo. -_-;; With the inclusion of Gobber Tinker, it seems that only Ogrun Bokur seems out of the party.
That's... just simply better than the non-theme list. -_-;;

Wow. A theme which allow anything in any combination. And with free points for everything. I will be harsh and call it one of the laziest and worst themes so far.

I have to agree with the initial thought... this seems a very lazy and bland design. Just a simple way for everything to be involved.

How is this not just "have some free points and flank" if it really has no restrictions? Seems like someone just stopped caring. PP are people too and it feels like whoever worked on this theme list isn't engaged in their work. Just burned out on the QA side and need a break to refresh. Happens.but it's important to recognize and address

I hope every faction gets a theme like that. Then I can play out of theme while playing in theme.

Its the "Hey people aren't using Jack marshals...give them unrestricted benefits!" Theme. That's some GW style model advertisement there There must be a better way to encourage jack marshals...like say..making the majority of them useful without a theme benefit...

But why even take Jack marshalls. Just take your normal Ossrum gun bunnies list and get 4 free solos. Should net you around 20 free points.
Should be the death of non-themes in merc

Its the "Hey people aren't using Jack marshals...give them unrestricted benefits!" Theme. That's some GW style model advertisement there The worst part is that the jacks that benefit from marshals are big heavy expensive ones...who also tend to be slow. AKA still bad Jack Marshal Targets. For Beeps sake, just give them better core rules already.

To be fair mercs have been in a bad place with the most restrictive themes . With the talk of allowing mercs in other themes they really had to throw them a bone

That's straight faction buff.
I don't know what to think about it. On one hand I think that wmh should just have free solos/uas baseline, because non-theme lists felt and still feel very incomplete without that and it's a big part of why people disliked mk3 from the start. On the other hand having only one faction access to it is obviously bad for competitive purpouses.

Not trying to defend the Irregulars theme, but I think we need to:
1) Take a step back 2) Take stock of what theme armies are already in place for the Mercenaries 3) Figure out what themes are probably coming for Mercenaries 4) How this theme fits in
Take a look at the theme armies that they have already released for the Mercenaries and the Minions: Hammer Strike (all dwarves), The Kingmaker's Army (fluff-based Cygnar civil war), Operating Theater (Cephalyx army), The Blindwater Congregation (Gatorman army), and The Thornfall Alliance (Farrow army).
Aside from the The Irregulars theme, I think it is safe to say that the a lot of the theme armies for the Mercenaries and the Minions are going to fall under the major divisions of the Mercenaries / Minions plus any major fluff-based needs, so we can probably expect a Privateer / Pirate theme army, a Steelhead army, and maybe theme armies based upon the contracts that we saw back in Mk2.
So, with all of these racial / fluffy theme armies, what kind of theme army do the other factions have that the Mercenaries don't?
A basic, Mercenary warjack army.
Everybody has been so busy being snarky about the lack of restrictions that you didn't notice all of the benefits for warjacks. Since none of the Mercenary warcasters are jack casters, and there aren't any Mercenary warjack support units, the Mercenaries need to rely upon jack marshals. And if there were to be restrictions placed upon the army, what kind would you put on the army?
I think that this theme army is designed very differently, where instead of getting balance through severe limitations and significant rewards the theme is supposed to be self limiting by drawing the player to load the army up with warjacks. Assuming that the player loads it up with warjacks and jack marshals there will not be that much room for units and little incentive to put support solos.
At least that's what I see in this. I could be wrong.
