So as a whole I feel the game is shifting more and more towards Theme forces as the primary method of list creation. This is not a thread to discuss if that is a good direction or not but simply from a competitive standpoint how much does Retribution depend on its theme forces. Personally I think of all of the factions retribution is one of the more theme independent ones out there mostly because we had such a strong internal balance before theme forces and we still have a lot of powerful options that are not allowed in themes (Disco, Impy, Sents). As a whole though, how often do you find yourselves reaching for theme forces during list creation and how many of your armies are run out of theme?

I started collecting with no knowledge of Themes or the like... I just bought what I thought was cool and took some advice from people in the know to guide me towards a somewhat competitive [but also just stuff I liked] list. I've now expanded that initial 75 pt list to have an option towards Forges, since that's something I wanted to play once I started figuring out what's what. Once that's painted up... and I'm making progress... I'm probably going to build towards a Defenders list. I'd need a couple units of Halberdiers, but that's pretty much it. I've got a unit of Riflemen and a Thane already. I like Elara's model, and I think she could work as a caster for that. I think Thyron would probably be better, but I'm iffy on his model, and feel like I "should" play a unit of swordsmen with him, which I don't want to do.

Right now I feel like ret is somewhat handicapped into theme lists by two factors at the moment. The Sloan/Caine three matchup is rough without forges, and if you want to run a solid ghostfleet answer you want to have a shadows list, if your not running ossyan.
I'm prepping for a team tourney and considering a vyros2 elara with both our if theme. I'm running a combined arms v2 list with full sents min strike force manticore impy and 3 griffins. crutching on v2 to dark horse people with the hybrid style list and elara to randomly assassinate on turn 4

I agree that Retribution currently has good non-Theme options but I suspect that we will play more Themes when we get them (for example playing Helynna in a Dawnguard Theme to gain access to Sentinels).
I like out Themes and tend to play Themes in general simply because they are thematic and (to me) a fun exercise in list building. For this reason, my tournament pair for tomorrow is double Theme. That said, there are certain 'casters and list concepts where I will gladly play out of Theme.

Im currently not running either list in my pairing in Theme due to my own restictions on playing painted. As soon as I can get a few more things painted ill have ossyan in theme.
If dawnguard theme allows Imperatus ill be tempted to pull my Helynna list into theme( id have to drop lanyssa and discordia).

As a person who ran themes or "tiered" forces in MK2 almost exclusively with my Retribution and Circle; I find that I am following the same path in MK3. When the Retribution themes dropped I was very excited to see the Shadows of Retribution as it reminded me of the Garryth "Assassins" tiered list that I ran for so many years.
As it stands now, I will take a warcaster that I want to play such as Garryth, Elara 2, or Thryon and make lists using all the themes for each caster. After I've done that I then make a non-theme list to use specific units that were left out such as Dahlia and Skatach.
I stopped caring long ago if there is a hard counter to the list I make, especially since the new themes provide bonuses and negatives to the list.

I have been playing Ossyan out of theme lately and he's really strong. Pairs very well with V2 FoW.

I usually find myself taking at least 1 theme for sure. I think Ret is still at a point where we have super viable/competitive options outside of theme but some casters really get set to high gear when the theme works for them. I.e. Vyros 2 in Forges of war.
