Hi guys
With Kriel Company making the weapon crews free, they might actually see table time. I used paper dollies for the play testing, but yesterday i decided to go buy some weapon crews. Turns out they are unreasonably expensive, so i decided to buy two and then try and magnetize them. I had no real plan on how to do it, and after looking at the model a while i decided that it would require a huge amount of work to make them look exactly like they do on the box, but with some fairly minor work i could make a reasonable approximation.
First off, i glued the frame together. Now, this one became a bit rickety and on the next model ill be more precise when gluing so i get straight angles. I also attached the front shield as it is glued on the Thumper. The Pummeler is supposed to use the same shield, but you glue it on upside down, so my Pummeler will have the Thumper front shield, because that is easier.
I also glued on magnets (2mm diameter, 2mm high cylinders) in the little holes where the barrel is supposed to attach. I just put small lump of green stuff in the hole (since it is already bigger than my magnet) and press in the magnet so that it is level with the inside of the frame.
Now it is time to work on the barrels. The cross bar on them is meant to go in the hole on the frames, so they are wider than the inside of the frame. I filed them down so they are exactly as wide as the inside of the frame. Just check every now and then and file them down until they precisely fit inside the frame. Once you have that figured out, i drilled 2mm holed in the cross pars and put in magnets there. Make sure the polarity is correct
An now you are pretty much done! I glued on the wheels, and the embellishments to the front shield, and here you can see the results. The barrel is easily swapped, so the model can be a Thumper (most likely) or a Pummeler as i see fit!
I will hold off on buying a third crew a while, because i can borrow at least one Thumper from a friend in a pinch, and i think the theme will be released with at least one new solo, so you probably will not use more than 2 weapon crews at a time.
So, hopefully i just saved you guys... 35-70 dollars. The work was quick enough that I basically made more money on this per hour than i do at work
