Protectorate were my first Warmachine army. Though I didn't have a clue how to play at the time, and my painting wasn't that good, so I eventually sold them off and moved on. Now I'm looking to get into an army that feels different from Mercs, and since several other people locally are jumping on Khador, I've been thinking of giving the Protectorate another shot in Mk3, and I wanted to get some feedback on things I'd like to play (competitive viability, things that work well with them, etc), and how to deal with trouble lists in the local area. Any feedback is appreciated.
So for casters I'm interested in:
Amon: I like the fact that he's a jack caster who can now take jacks, simply enough. Lots of Dervishes is a given (I can't believe they're 7pts!), but what else?
Severius-2: Seems to have a lot of stuff that makes opponents go "um...", and being able to simply say "go away" to annoying Deathstalkers, Master Tormentors, Eliminators, Mage Hunter Assassins, etc, will be very welcome.
Testament & Reznik-1: I just like the guys, but could never figure out how they actually worked in Mk2. Are they any better now?
Durst: I like going Maximum Brick, if it can be done without making the list completely two-dimensional and dull to play.
Thyra: Always liked her and by all accounts, she's improved. But what to take with her?
The local meta is pretty high-powered and I'm trying to get onto that level without sacrificing fun, so to start with, I'm really looking for a list pair that can handle things like the following:
--Makeda-2 plus eleven immortal, un-jammable, Dodging, knockdown-immune cats (first thoughts: Reznik, Flamebringers).
--Vlad-1 Rocketeer gunline rolling over everything on the board with big numbers (first thoughts: Choir, jack wall, ambushing Daughters).
--Iron Fangs plus various counter-chargers behind Zerkova's cloud wall, with an extra layer of denial from the feat.
--Haley3 and endless Storm Lances.
--Ghost Fleet. I'm happy to see Cryx back, not so thrilled it's through gear-check lists.
I have been looking at DGI tournament stats, but I think they're a bit skewed by High Reclaimer being a game-breaker for so long.
