Okay, so now the question is: what kind of terrain do I need?
Four ruins, obviously. They'll be wrecked buildings.
It's a cityscape, so I'll need some regular buildings.
But what other terrain types can we come up with for a city?

Hills. 7 hills.

Sorry, what? I can’t find that in the rule book anywhere.

Well, obviously it goes without saying that if you've got buildings and ruined buildings then you're also bringing burning buildings and burning ruined buildings.

Statues, wells, market stalls, carts, I think a few warjacks wrecks wouldn't look out of place (finally a use for those old wreck markers!).

Make a park or two so you can include some forests. Rubble in streets to act as craters too.
And yeah some burning stuff.
Cheers, Dave

And the town is now occupied by a handful of Cason Imps that roam around blowing up randomly, and maybe some uncontrolled war beasts looking for scraps that rage each round.

Okay, so far I have:
— Some number of urban buildings. Think I’m gonna steal the style as seen in the art on the MK II Forces of Warmachine: Khador book, because googling “1800’s Russian city” and associated permutations isn’t coming up with anything inspiring. (I am open to suggestions, if somebody finds something better than I did.)
— Four ruins, which will just be destroyed buildings. (I am open to suggestions for proper middle-of-the-city ruins.)
— One or two piles of rubble, which will likely be on fire. (I bought some of the PP fire ...uh...blobs? Whatever they are... at GenCon, and I want to use them.)
— Maybe a forest, which I can probably do up in “city park” style. I’m not sold on this one. Do you think Khardov has city parks?
But this doesn’t seem like enough. I would like some more doodads laying around, something that adds atmosphere but is also a meaningful piece of terrain.
Could I somehow work an acid bath into it? Or shallow water? Dense fog? I guess fog could work.
Hmm. Gotta think about this.

The entrance to the ancient ruins is in an industrial district. Ruined machinery, fuel tanks/coal depots that are still on fire, acid pools and so on could all fit in that case. Not the forest though.

Not the forest though. Hmm. That actually circles back around to an industrial table idea I had plans for a couple years ago. I got stuck on the “scrap yard” terrain and couldn’t finish it, though.

Ah, my age-old problem with Unbound has surfaced: my 225-point list always feels like it’s missing something, and I really don’t feel like it comes together until 300 points or so...

I wanted to try to finish painting Defender last weekend, but got caught up 3D printing some models for a homebrew battleship game thing my friend is writing. That reminded me of a homebrew skirmish game ruleset I was writing a while back (it was based on some game mechanics from Knight Models' superhero games, but cleaned up and expanded). If I ever finish it I think it would be very versatile, though a bit vanilla (it doesn't really have any unique game mechanics, it's quite generic), but the biggest issue I think I would face would be balancing.
Anyway, anybody here ever try writing their own ruleset? Did it ever go anywhere?
